DON'T MISS A MOMENT OF THE WORLD CUP
Thomas Tuchel suggests Bukayo Saka may stay on the bench again for England’s World Cup match against Ghana
England head coach Thomas Tuchel has hinted that winger Bukayo Saka might not start in the upcoming World Cup fixture against Ghana. Although Saka came off the bench to score and assist in the opening 4-2 win over Croatia, the Arsenal forward’s playing time continues to be carefully controlled due to an ongoing Achilles concern.
Tuchel takes no chances with key forward
The Three Lions began their Group L campaign in style by beating Croatia 4-2, with Saka immediately assisting Marcus Rashford after coming on as a second-half substitute. Despite his impact, the national team staff are keen to manage the 24-year-old’s workload during the early stages of the tournament. Having played through discomfort during Arsenal’s Premier League title run, Tuchel is adopting a cautious stance to preserve his fitness.
Manager details recovery strategy
While Saka has publicly expressed his willingness to push his physical limits for the team, Tuchel is focused on the long-term tournament goals. The England manager explained: “Bukayo is ready and will get more and more ready. I think once we go to the last game of this group he will be ready.”
This measured approach contrasts with Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta’s usual preference for keeping medical matters surrounding his key players private.
Squad strength provides flexibility
Medical evaluations confirm that Saka’s Achilles tendinitis has not worsened since the end of the demanding club season. However, Tuchel appears intent on ensuring the winger hits peak condition for the knockout stages. England’s attacking options allow such rotation, with Noni Madueke expected to continue on the right flank. The decision also seems justified given the strong performances from others, such as Ivan Toney, who netted a hat-trick in a recent 5-1 behind-closed-doors friendly win over Sporting Kansas City.
Ghana pose a physical challenge
England will face Ghana at the Boston Stadium on Tuesday in a crucial top-of-the-table encounter. The Black Stars, who opened their campaign with a 1-0 victory over Panama, are known for their physical strength and disciplined play. A second successive win for England would guarantee their spot in the round of 32 ahead of their final group fixture against Panama in New Jersey.
Can England maintain their momentum and go deep into the World Cup?
