Former Manchester United striker Edinson Cavani has made a major decision regarding his professional future after reaching an agreement to terminate his contract with Boca Juniors.

Cavani joined Manchester United on a free transfer in October 2020, signing a one-year deal with an option for a second season. He was handed the legendary number 7 shirt, previously worn by club icons such as David Beckham and Cristiano Ronaldo.

Despite early concerns about his age and injury history, Cavani injected valuable experience and leadership into the United dressing room. His debut season at Old Trafford was impressive, netting his first goal for the club in a 3-1 win over Everton in November.

Among his standout moments in a United shirt were his brilliant brace in the 3-2 comeback victory against Southampton, a goal during the record-equalling 9-0 demolition of Southampton, and playing a key role in guiding the team to the Europa League final. He also scored a spectacular 40-yard lob against Fulham — the first goal at Old Trafford in front of fans since the COVID-19 pandemic.

Although United extended his stay for another year, Cavani’s game time significantly decreased following Cristiano Ronaldo’s return and recurring fitness problems. He eventually departed at the end of the 2021/22 season when his contract expired.

After leaving Old Trafford, the Uruguayan forward moved to Valencia, where he spent a single season before joining Boca Juniors. Reports now indicate that his spell with the Argentine side has come to an end.

According to Argentine outlet Ole, Cavani’s ongoing struggles with chronic back injuries have prompted both the player and Boca Juniors to mutually agree to part ways.

This season has been particularly difficult for the 39-year-old striker, who has managed just two appearances in recent months. Persistent lumbago and a herniated disc have hindered his performance, and although he underwent surgery earlier in the campaign, it failed to resolve the issue.

However, despite his recent setbacks, Cavani has no intention of hanging up his boots. Those close to him insist that he remains motivated to continue playing, provided he finds a club environment better suited to his physical needs.

One of Cavani’s representatives stated, “He feels good and is looking forward to what comes next. Ending this contract does not mean he is retiring.”

Cavani becomes the second former Manchester United player to leave Boca Juniors in recent weeks, following the departure of Ander Herrera.
