The Algerian Football Federation has officially filed a complaint with FIFA over refereeing decisions made during their 3-0 defeat to Argentina in their opening World Cup fixture. The North African side argues that Lionel Messi and Alexis Mac Allister were extremely lucky to avoid red cards, raising questions about the fairness of the reigning champions’ victory.

The complaint focuses on several controversial calls made by Polish referee Szymon Marciniak during the Group J clash in Kansas City. As reported by The Athletic, Algeria’s submission details a dangerous 30th-minute challenge in which the Argentine captain caught Aissa Mandi with his studs raised. The federation also pointed out another incident where Mac Allister allegedly elbowed Ibrahim Maza but was not penalised for the action.

While FIFA has yet to issue an official response to the complaint, Algeria’s coaching staff expressed strong dissatisfaction with the handling of the incidents. Head coach Vladimir Petkovic remarked, “It’s pointless commenting on hypothetical situations, but everyone saw it, including me.”

Despite the controversy, it was a landmark night for Messi, who marked his 200th international appearance by matching Miroslav Klose’s all-time World Cup record of 16 goals. According to The Athletic, a source within the Algerian camp indicated the federation was deeply concerned by what it described as insufficient protection for its players during these unpunished challenges. Nevertheless, Messi’s hat-trick ensured Argentina claimed a decisive three points to open their campaign in style.

Looking ahead, Argentina will now turn their attention to upcoming Group J fixtures against Austria and Jordan as they aim to secure early progression to the knockout rounds. Maintaining discipline and composure on the field will be crucial as the defending champions seek to balance their attacking brilliance with control amid growing off-field scrutiny.

How far can Argentina go at this year’s World Cup?
