Manchester United have reportedly received a significant boost in their chase for West Ham United midfielder Mateus Fernandes, with a recent update suggesting that the player favours a move to Old Trafford rather than Tottenham Hotspur. According to claims on X, Fernandes has told his agent that Manchester United is his preferred destination and has instructed him to reach out to the club to discuss their next steps.
While the source of this information means it should be treated cautiously, the report aligns with the overall trend of the transfer saga surrounding the midfielder.
Manchester United have been consistently linked with Fernandes for several weeks. Sky Sports has reported that the club are actively exploring a potential deal for the West Ham player.
The same report indicates that West Ham have placed an £80 million valuation on Fernandes and are not under immediate pressure to sell him.
Tottenham Hotspur have also entered the race for the midfielder. According to talkSPORT, Spurs have made a formal enquiry, although Manchester United remain in a stronger position, having already held advanced discussions with the player’s representatives.
This makes Fernandes’ preference crucial. If the 22-year-old is genuinely set on joining Manchester United, it could simplify negotiations for the Old Trafford hierarchy and reduce Tottenham’s chances of converting their interest into a serious bid.
Spurs, however, are expected to show ambition in the upcoming transfer window, with both Fernandes and Sandro Tonali among their key midfield targets this summer.
For Manchester United, signing Fernandes would be a logical step. The club are currently restructuring their midfield, aiming to recruit players capable of dictating play, carrying the ball forward, and coping with the physical demands of the Premier League.
Fernandes fits that profile perfectly, offering a blend of high energy, composure, and technical skill in midfield.
West Ham’s recent relegation could also play a role in shaping the situation. Although the Hammers are holding out for a substantial fee, financial realities might eventually push them to accept a more realistic offer.
Manchester United still have considerable work ahead of them, as no agreement has yet been reached with West Ham, and the £80 million asking price remains a major hurdle.
Nevertheless, if Fernandes has indeed urged his agent to prioritise United, the momentum in this transfer race may now be swinging in favour of the Red Devils and Old Trafford.
