Leader of Opposition Umang Singhar has attacked the BJP government over the rising electricity bills in Madhya Pradesh. He alleged that on one hand, electricity bills worth thousands of rupees are being sent to the common consumers, while the government departments themselves remain debtors of thousands of crores of rupees to the power companies.

The Congress leader said that various government departments of the state owe electricity distribution companies about Rs 2123 crore. They allege that due to non-recovery of these outstanding amounts on time, the power companies suffer financial loss and this is compensated from the general public by increasing the electricity tariff every year. He said that the government is failing to collect the bills from its departments, but the burden is passed on to the consumers.

Congress cornered the government regarding electricity bills

Umang Singhar raised the question that if a common consumer does not pay the electricity bill, then action like disconnecting the connection is immediately taken against him, but why no strict action is taken despite the outstanding of thousands of crores of rupees on the government departments. Calling it double standards, he said that the common citizen is suffering the consequences of the government’s irresponsibility.

Accused of putting extra burden on the public

The Leader of Opposition has alleged that under the BJP government, the burden of losses of power companies, negligence of departments and financial mismanagement is being put directly on the public pockets. He said that people in the state are already troubled by inflation and rising cost of living, hence the ever increasing electricity bills are creating additional financial crisis for them.

Let us tell you that the financial condition of electricity distribution companies in Madhya Pradesh has been a topic of discussion for a long time. The State Government and the Energy Department have been running special campaigns from time to time for recovery of outstanding electricity dues. In recent years, power companies had also launched resolution schemes to recover outstanding bills worth thousands of crores of rupees from consumers, which were said to be aimed at strengthening the financial position of the distribution companies. Regarding this, Congress alleges that if the dues of government departments are recovered on time and transparency is brought in the electricity distribution system, then the pressure of additional tariff increase on common consumers can be reduced.
