Major action has been taken against alleged fake schools in Uttar Pradesh. The Uttar Pradesh Madhyamik Shiksha Parishad (UP Board) has revoked the recognition of 465 schools across the state for the academic sessions 2024-25 and 2025-26. Consequently, students who have secured admission or registered with these schools may face difficulties. The UP Board stated that the recognition was revoked because it was found that no students from these schools had appeared for the UP Class 10 or 12 board examinations over the past two academic sessions, even though classes were supposedly being conducted there.
Let us understand the matter in detail, the rules under which the UP Board took this action, and why such schools could cause harm to students.
**Action Taken Under Specific Rules**
The UP Board revoked the recognition in compliance with established regulations. UP Board Secretary Bhagwati Singh explained that under the provisions of the Intermediate Education Act, 1921, if no student from an institution appears for examinations for two consecutive years, or if classes are not conducted, the school's recognition is deemed automatically cancelled. He stated that the recognition of 465 schools across various districts had lapsed automatically, and the schools have been informed of this decision.
**Schools Existing Only on Paper**
The revocation of recognition for these 465 schools has revealed that they were essentially operating only on paper. While these schools held UP Board recognition, they were not actually functioning. It is believed that although students were registered with many of these schools, no classes were being held. Schools are being shut down in these districts.
According to information shared by the UP Board, the recognition of "paper schools"—schools that exist only on paper—operating across virtually all districts of the state has been revoked.
Prayagraj alone accounts for more than two dozen such schools. Similarly, the recognition of numerous paper schools has been cancelled in Pratapgarh, Kaushambi, Deoria, Sultanpur, Fatehpur, Ayodhya, Ambedkar Nagar, Barabanki, Gonda, Sant Kabir Nagar, Gorakhpur, Mau, Azamgarh, Ballia, Jaunpur, Balrampur, Etah, Mathura, Ghazipur, Etawah, Kannauj, Aligarh, Hathras, Noida, Ghaziabad, Muzaffarnagar, Saharanpur, Meerut, Bareilly, Bijnor, Moradabad, and Hardoi.
