St. Andrew's is preparing to witness some of the biggest stars in global football this summer, as Barcelona have officially announced a high-profile friendly against Tom Brady's Birmingham City. The Catalan powerhouses will travel to the West Midlands as part of their pre-season tour, marking a significant milestone for the Championship club and its celebrity ownership group.
Flick begins pre-season training in England
Under the guidance of Hansi Flick, Barcelona will open their pre-season with a two-week training camp near Burton-upon-Trent, ahead of the 2026-27 campaign. The much-anticipated fixture against the Championship side will provide an ideal early test for the Spanish giants, as Flick looks to implement new tactical ideas and build player fitness in preparation for another challenging domestic and European season.
However, Flick’s initial squad for the summer is expected to be affected by the ongoing 2026 World Cup. With several key players likely to be rested after international duty, the pre-season camp will give younger and fringe players a valuable opportunity to make an impression. There remains a slim possibility that stars such as Lamine Yamal could still feature in the travelling squad.
Brady ready to host European heavyweights
The announcement of the star-studded fixture has sparked widespread excitement, especially in the United States, where NFL legend Tom Brady is a minority shareholder and president of the advisory board at Birmingham City. The seven-time Super Bowl champion, who has also been seen attending World Cup matches, shared his enthusiasm online shortly after the fixture was confirmed.
“Welcome to Birmingham,” wrote the American icon on his official account, adding a handshake emoji. Since joining forces with club chairman Tom Wagner in 2023, Brady has become a prominent figure at the club, even bringing global celebrities like David Beckham to witness major games, including the memorable “Hollywood Derby” against Wrexham.
Davies seeks to build on record-breaking momentum
Birmingham City manager Chris Davies will regard the meeting with Barcelona as an excellent measure of his team’s progress ahead of the demanding 46-game Championship season. The Blues secured promotion back to the second tier at the first attempt in 2024-25, following a historic League One campaign in which they collected an astonishing 111 points during Davies’ first full season at the helm.
Despite strong financial support from Knighthead Capital Management, Birmingham experienced a mixed return to the Championship, ultimately finishing 10th after their play-off push faded in March. Even so, that top-half finish marked their best league position in ten years, providing a solid platform for Davies to mount a serious promotion challenge under the league’s newly revised play-off system.
Historic rivalry and surging ticket demand
Although such a high-profile encounter is unusual for a second-tier club, Birmingham and Barcelona share a long-standing footballing connection stretching back nearly seventy years. The two sides have met five times before, most notably in the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup semi-final in 1957-58 and again in the final in 1959-60, with Barcelona triumphant on both occasions.
Unsurprisingly, demand for tickets to the blockbuster contest at St. Andrew’s is expected to reach record levels. The club has announced that season ticket holders for both the men’s and women’s teams will be given early access beginning Monday, June 22, while the remaining tickets will go on general sale from Wednesday, July 1.
