Barcelona and Chelsea are reportedly preparing to battle it out for the signature of Juventus full-back Andrea Cambiaso. Despite an inconsistent season in Turin, the 26-year-old remains one of Europe’s most sought-after defenders as the 2026-27 campaign approaches.
Barcelona eye bold player exchange
The Catalan club have stepped up their pursuit of the Juventus defender. As per reports from La Gazzetta dello Sport, Barcelona have offered Uruguayan centre-back Ronald Araujo, aged 27, as part of a potential swap deal. Araujo, whose current contract runs until 2031, has long been admired by Juventus, having been a target for former sporting director Cristiano Giuntoli in January 2025 before attention shifted to Lloyd Kelly.
For head coach Hansi Flick, Cambiaso would represent a considerable upgrade to his full-back options. While Jules Koundé remains a dependable defensive cover and Joao Cancelo operates on the right, the left side continues to lack depth, with Alejandro Balde and centre-back Gerard Martín often filling in. Cambiaso’s versatility to perform effectively on both flanks makes him an ideal fit for Flick’s tactical vision at Camp Nou.
Alonso’s presence gives Chelsea potential advantage
Although Barcelona are keen on a swap arrangement, Chelsea are pushing ahead with their own pursuit and could hold a financial and strategic advantage. The Blues recently earned €60 million from the sale of Marc Cucurella to Real Madrid, giving them the budgetary freedom to meet Juventus’ valuation. The driving influence behind the move is manager Xabi Alonso, who has been an admirer of Cambiaso since his managerial spell in Madrid.
Alonso views the Italian full-back as a perfect fit for his positional play system at Stamford Bridge. Within the Spaniard’s tactical setup, the left-back is expected to contribute beyond providing width, often moving infield to play a creative role in central areas. It was in a similar inverted role under Thiago Motta that Cambiaso delivered his most impressive displays for Juventus, performances that also drew interest from Manchester City.
Why Cambiaso remains a prized asset in Europe
The growing interest in Cambiaso is hardly surprising given his distinctive tactical profile. Managers favouring possession-based, attacking football value his spatial intelligence and adaptability beyond mere statistics. Italy head coach Luciano Spalletti once perfectly captured his uniqueness by describing him as a “3D footballer”.
During the last season, Cambiaso featured in 47 matches for Juventus across all competitions, contributing three goals and five assists.
Juventus’ financial realities shape their transfer stance
Juventus CEO Giovanni Carnevali is currently managing a testing financial situation where capital generation is a pressing concern. Although the club’s technical department appreciates Cambiaso’s versatility, the financial constraints could compel them to consider his sale. This economic pressure makes a direct cash transfer to Chelsea potentially more appealing to the club’s board than Barcelona’s proposed swap.
A straight cash deal from the Premier League side would provide Juventus with greater flexibility to reinvest in the market and identify a suitable replacement. However, the chance to sign Araujo remains tempting for the Bianconeri, as the Uruguayan would provide an immediate solution to a long-standing issue in central defence.
