Edinson Cavani has reached an agreement to end his contract with Boca Juniors, but the former Manchester United striker has made it clear he has no intention of retiring at the age of 39.
The Uruguayan forward, who joined the Argentinian club in 2023, follows ex-Manchester United teammate Ander Herrera in departing Buenos Aires as Boca undergoes a major squad reshuffle. Cavani’s exit comes earlier than planned, marking the end of a brief but eventful spell at the club.
Chronic back problems lead to mutual decision
According to reports from Argentine outlet Ole, persistent back injuries were the key reason behind the mutual decision to terminate the deal without any financial settlement. Cavani’s availability had been severely limited in recent months, preventing him from making a consistent contribution to the team.
The veteran striker managed to play only two matches this season, struggling with lumbago and a herniated disc. Earlier in the campaign, he even underwent back microsurgery in an attempt to recover, but the physical intensity of Argentine football proved too demanding for his condition.
Cavani eyes new opportunities beyond Argentina
Despite the early end to his Boca Juniors stint, Cavani is not planning to retire. Sources close to the player insist the decision was based purely on finding a playing environment more compatible with his current physical state rather than signalling the end of his career.
“He feels good, and he is looking forward to the next chapter. This contract cancellation does not mean he is retiring,” a representative said. While exploring his next football destination, Cavani is also focusing on expanding his business interests, including his premium wine brand, Cavani Wines, which he launched successfully in 2024.
No trophies won with Boca Juniors
Cavani leaves Boca Juniors without adding any titles to his already impressive list of honours. This is the second time in his career he has personally initiated a contract termination, having previously paid £1.3 million to end his agreement with Spanish club Valencia.
Before moving to Argentina, Cavani enjoyed an illustrious career in Europe, starting at Palermo in 2007 before achieving prolific success with Napoli and Paris Saint-Germain. During his time in France, he won six Ligue 1 titles and later joined Manchester United in 2020, scoring 19 goals in 59 appearances for the Premier League giants.
‘El Matador’ remains a potent force
Internationally, Cavani’s legacy is firmly established as one of South America’s most accomplished goal scorers. Nicknamed “El Matador”, he scored an impressive 58 goals in 136 matches for Uruguay, ranking as the nation’s second-highest scorer ever.
His international highlights include winning the 2011 Copa América and helping Uruguay reach the 2010 World Cup semi-finals. Although he retired from international football in 2022, Cavani’s sharp instincts and finishing ability ensure that several clubs will keep a close watch on him as he enters free agency.
