Referee Announced for Switzerland vs Bosnia and Herzegovina World Cup Clash

World Cup Group B continues tonight as the tournament moves into its second round of fixtures, with Switzerland facing Bosnia and Herzegovina. Both teams will be eager to secure their first win after collecting a single point each in their opening matches.

The match officials have been confirmed ahead of the game, and here’s a closer look at the team in charge of this crucial fixture.

The referee for the Switzerland vs Bosnia and Herzegovina match will be Joao Pinheiro from Portugal. A highly experienced match official, Pinheiro has a strong resume, having overseen games in Portugal’s Primeira Liga, the UEFA Champions League, and the Europa League. He also officiated Tottenham Hotspur’s 2025 Super Cup defeat to Paris Saint-Germain.

This will mark Pinheiro’s debut at the World Cup, although he has been part of FIFA’s official refereeing list since 2019. His first senior international appearance came the same year when he took charge of a friendly between Brazil and Panama.

Pinheiro is no stranger to managing top-level footballers such as Cristiano Ronaldo and Sadio Mane, as he regularly officiates matches in the Saudi Pro League and the Egyptian Premier League.

Over his career, he has officiated 440 matches, issuing 1,980 yellow cards and 45 red cards, averaging about five yellow cards per game — a statistic that highlights his strict approach to discipline.

Assisting Pinheiro at Sofi Stadium in Los Angeles will be fellow Portuguese officials Bruno Jesus and Luciano Maia. Another compatriot, Tiago Martins, will serve as the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) for the match.

The officiating crew also includes Japanese officials Yusuke Araki, who will act as the fourth official, and Jun Mihara, who will serve as the reserve assistant referee.

Switzerland enter the match after being held to a frustrating 1-1 draw by Qatar in their opener. Breel Embolo had given them an early lead from the penalty spot, but Miro Muheim’s late equaliser denied them victory.

Similarly, Bosnia and Herzegovina were forced to settle for a 1-1 draw with Canada in their first outing, conceding an equaliser in the 78th minute after taking the lead.

With both sides sitting on a single point, tonight’s encounter is pivotal. A win for either Switzerland or Bosnia and Herzegovina would likely secure their place in the knockout stages of the 2026 World Cup.
