Thomas Tuchel began his first World Cup campaign as England manager on a victorious note, but the 4-2 win over Croatia came with flashes of tension. The German tactician was caught in an animated exchange with one of his senior players, demanding tactical precision from the sidelines during the Group L opener in Dallas.
Tuchel clashes with Pickford on the pitch
England’s promising start under Tuchel was briefly unsettled seventeen minutes into their World Cup debut at the Dallas Stadium. Even though the Three Lions held a 1-0 advantage, the former Chelsea manager was visibly furious when goalkeeper Jordan Pickford failed to follow his detailed passing instructions.
According to Fox reporter Geoff Shreeves, as cited by The Sun, the moment of tension arose when Pickford, slightly off-balance on his left, ignored Tuchel’s directive to play the ball to the right-back. Instead, the Everton keeper chose an alternative outlet, prompting an immediate and fiery reaction from his manager. Tuchel stormed to the edge of his technical area to make his displeasure clear to the 32-year-old shot-stopper.
‘Do as I told you!’
The heated exchange was picked up by pitchside microphones and recounted by Shreeves, who described the intensity of the moment. After Pickford appeared to respond to his manager, Tuchel cut him off sternly. Shreeves explained: “Just now, Jordan Pickford was on his left side and off balance and still picked up. Thomas Tuchel was straight out to the touchline and said, ‘No, put it out to the right back, you don’t go that side.’ Pickford had a little go back and Tuchel was not impressed. He told him, ‘You know what you’re supposed to do, do as I told you!’”
Assistant coach Anthony Barry echoed Tuchel’s frustration during a half-time interview with ITV, admitting that England had shown “fearful patterns” early on and struggled to decide when to play long or short passes during a nervy opening spell.
Kane reveals halftime reset
The first half ended in a frantic 2-2 draw, with goals from captain Harry Kane and Croatia’s Martin Baturina and Petar Musa. However, after the interval, England emerged rejuvenated. Kane, who equalled Gary Lineker’s England World Cup goal record in the match, revealed that Tuchel’s halftime talk transformed the team’s mindset.
Reflecting on the manager’s influence, Kane said: “He told us to take the shackles off, calm down and let’s go. He said, what’s the worst that can happen? Show the world who we can be. We came out in the second half full gas and they couldn’t live with it, and that’s the level we have to set in every game. The way we controlled the game once we went ahead, we never really looked like we were in danger and then scored on the counterattack. We had a spell where we could have scored three or four. Credit to everyone: the first game of the tournament and a great result against a tough side.”
Bellingham plays down locker-room tension
Jude Bellingham, whose stunning strike made it 3-2 to England, minimised suggestions of a dramatic halftime atmosphere following the earlier sideline confrontation. The Real Madrid midfielder emphasised that despite Tuchel’s visible anger with Pickford, the dressing room remained focused and composed.
Bellingham elaborated on Tuchel’s approach, saying: “It wasn’t one of those where it was a big drama or standing up and shouting; it was what the team needed. We have a mature group with great leaders in there, everyone knew the level we had to get to. The start of the second half gave us a great platform.” England sealed the 4-2 victory thanks to a late goal from Marcus Rashford and will now aim to build on that momentum when they face Ghana on June 23.
