Ishan Kishan-Shubman Gill Create Unique ODI Record No Indian Duo, Including Rohit-Kohli, Has Ever Achieved

In India's second One Day International match against Afghanistan at Lucknow, Shubman Gill and Ishan Kishan made history when they scripted something which no Indian batting pair ever achieved.

Both batters made a stunning combination of hitting strokes and showing aggression and temperament as they reached their hundred runs in under 80 balls each. This was for the first time in Indian ODI cricket that any batting pair managed to score a hundred in 80 balls or less.

What makes this record so special is India’s rich ODI history with many batting combinations like the Sachin-Tendulkar, Sehwag-Gambhir, and Rohit Sharma-Virat Kohli pairs. But none of them came close to this achievement.

This feat also put India on an exclusive world list as this was only the eighth instance in total where two batters scored centuries in ODIs in 80 balls or fewer in the same innings.

Gill Leads From the Front With Maiden ODI Ton as Captain

Gill continued his impressive run in the series after scoring an unbeaten 84 in the first ODI at Dharamsala. The Indian captain seemed to be in complete control of the match throughout his innings and reached his century from 77 deliveries.

It was special for another reason as this was his first ODI century as Indian skipper and the ninth of his ODI career.

Gill became only the fourth Indian captain after Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli and Virender Sehwag to score a ton in 77 or less deliveries.

The calm and composed batting displayed by the Indian captain gave India a very strong platform while keeping the scoring rate high.

Kishan's Brutal Acceleration Changes the Match

If Gill played a composed innings at the crease, then Ishan Kishan attacked Afghanistan bowlers from the start. The left-hander completed his fifty off 52 deliveries and then completely changed the dimension of the match by smashing the next 53 runs from just 19 balls and completing his century with a boundary.

Kishan completed his maiden ODI hundred off just 71 deliveries and it turned out to be one of the fastest ODI hundreds against Afghanistan.

Fastest ODI Hundreds against Afghanistan (by balls)

  • Eoin Morgan - 57
  • Rohit Sharma - 63
  • Ishan Kishan - 71
  • Glenn Maxwell - 76
  • Shubman Gill - 77

Together, Gill and Kishan turned the Lucknow ODI into a historic event by setting a record no Indian batting duo had set before, putting the Afghanistan team under immense pressure.
