Delhi's fast bowler, Prince Yadav, has realized his aspiration of wearing the Indian national jersey, receiving his first international cap before the second ODI against Afghanistan at the Ekana Cricket Stadium in Lucknow on June 17.
The Indian team made three adjustments to their lineup following a seven-wicket win in the rain-affected first match in Dharamshala. All-rounder Nitish Kumar Reddy was sidelined due to a thigh injury, leading to the inclusion of Yashasvi Jaiswal, Kuldeep Yadav, and debutant Prince Yadav.
A Memorable Ceremony
Before the second ODI, Shreyas Iyer, India's ODI vice-captain, presented Prince Yadav with the ODI cap number 263 during a heartfelt team huddle, marking a pivotal moment in his career. Prince, who previously played for the Lucknow Super Giants in IPL 2026, was selected to bolster the bowling lineup alongside Gurnoor Brar.
A Journey Almost Cut Short
Although Prince Yadav has achieved his dream of playing for Team India, his path was nearly obstructed before it truly began. The 23-year-old was rapidly advancing through Delhi's youth cricket ranks until a setback in 2019 halted his progress due to age misrepresentation.
Concerns about his age arose from a standard BCCI verification with CBSE records, revealing a mismatch between his actual birth date and the one provided for tournament eligibility. This revelation resulted in a two-year ban from all forms of cricket, which was particularly detrimental as it coincided with the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Reportedly, Prince had falsely claimed to be 17 years old for U19 cricket eligibility, which abruptly halted his promising career. While his peers participated in the 2022 ICC Under-19 World Cup, which India won, Prince was left to reflect on how his poor choices cost him valuable developmental years.
Mentorship and Resilience
During his two-year ban, Prince Yadav focused on rebuilding his skills away from the public eye, training under the guidance of former Delhi pacer Pradeep Sangwan. He utilized this time to enhance his technique and fitness, often practicing in secluded areas to avoid scrutiny.
Reflecting on this challenging period, Prince described it as a dark time in his life but credited his family's unwavering support and Sangwan's mentorship for keeping him motivated. "That was a very dark phase. My family supported me because they understood I could do something in my life by playing cricket. Former Delhi fast bowler Pradeep Sangwan came to me and said he would train me during that period," he shared in an interview.
Return to Competitive Cricket
Prince Yadav made his return to competitive cricket in 2022, armed with a renewed sense of purpose after refining his skills during his absence. He made his debut in first-class, List A, and T20 formats for Delhi in 2024.
His impressive performances in domestic cricket caught the attention of the Lucknow Super Giants, who signed him for his base price of INR 30 lakh during the IPL 2025 mega auction, retaining him for the 2026 season.
A Breakthrough IPL Season
Despite the Lucknow Super Giants not qualifying for the playoffs, Prince Yadav's individual performances stood out. In 14 matches, he took 16 wickets with an average of 28.68 and an economy rate of 8.82, a significant improvement from the previous season where he managed just three wickets in six matches.
His stellar season earned him a place in the Indian ODI squad for the series against Afghanistan, as well as inclusion in the T20I squad for upcoming series against Ireland and England, along with participation in the Asian Games 2026 in Japan. This marks his evolution into a multi-format contender for the national team.
A Testament to Redemption
From facing a two-year ban due to age fraud to becoming an integral part of India's bowling lineup, Prince Yadav's journey exemplifies the theme of redemption in professional sports.
