Three-time world champions Argentina are set to kick off their 2026 World Cup campaign in Group J against African representatives Algeria.
The match is scheduled to take place at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City on Wednesday, 17 June 2026, at 08:00 WIB.
In terms of quality and experience, Argentina are clear favourites to secure all three points.
Under the guidance of Lionel Scaloni, the Albiceleste enter the tournament ranked number one in the FIFA world standings, backed by an impressive run of recent performances.
Beyond chasing victory, this fixture could mark a historic milestone for captain Lionel Messi. If selected, the 39-year-old maestro will make his 200th appearance for the Argentina national team.
Argentina Arrive in Confident Form
Argentina head into the 2026 World Cup full of confidence, having won all of their last five matches.
The blend of seasoned stars like Lionel Messi, Rodrigo De Paul, Alexis Mac Allister, and Emiliano Martinez with emerging talents such as Julian Alvarez and Enzo Fernandez ensures Scaloni’s side remain among the top contenders for the title.
On the other hand, Algeria arrive with fairly solid but inconsistent form.
The Fennecs have recorded three wins, one draw, and one defeat in their last five outings.
With Riyad Mahrez leading the attack, Vladimir Petkovic’s team are expected to rely on quick counterattacks to contain Argentina’s dominance.
Head-to-Head: Argentina vs Algeria
Historically, these two nations have rarely faced each other. They have met only once before.
On 6 June 2007, Argentina defeated Algeria 4-3 in an international friendly, with Lionel Messi scoring twice to secure a dramatic win.
Head-to-head record:
- Argentina wins: 1
- Algeria wins: 0
- Draws: 0

Key Players to Watch
Lionel Messi (Argentina)
Even at 39, Messi remains the heartbeat of Argentina’s play. His vast experience across six World Cup editions and ability to unlock defences in tight situations make him the biggest threat to the Algerian backline.
This match could also mark his 200th cap for Argentina — a rare and remarkable achievement in international football.
Riyad Mahrez (Algeria)
The Algerian captain continues to be the creative force of his team. His pace, vision, and scoring ability from the wings could pose a genuine challenge for Argentina’s defence.
Score Prediction
Argentina are expected to dominate possession from the outset.
With a more balanced squad and superior experience at the highest level, Scaloni’s side are well-placed to claim victory.
Algeria may threaten through swift counterattacks, but Argentina’s defensive organisation appears strong enough to neutralise those attempts.
Predicted score: Argentina 3-1 Algeria.
If Messi performs at his best, this Group J opener could provide the perfect stage for him to celebrate his 200th international appearance with a winning start.
PSSI Pangkalpinang Chairman Backs Argentina
As the reigning world champions, Argentina are once again tipped as favourites to lift the 2026 World Cup trophy on Sunday, 14 June 2026.
The prediction comes from Henry Sujono, Chairman of the Pangkalpinang City Football Association (Askot PSSI), who believes Argentina’s squad remains largely unchanged from the team that triumphed at the 2022 World Cup.
“They have players with exceptional skills, and compared to Brazil, I think Brazil are currently in decline,” said Henry Sujono.
Several key players who featured in the 2022 final win over France — including goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez, defenders Lisandro Martinez, Nicolas Tagliafico, Cristian Romero, and Nicolas Otamendi — remain central figures in this campaign.
The midfield also retains its core with Leandro Paredes, Rodrigo De Paul, Alexis Mac Allister, and Chelsea’s Enzo Fernandez expected to dictate play and control the tempo.
However, the frontline has seen some notable absences, as veteran Angel Di Maria retired from international duty and Paulo Dybala, who scored in the 2022 final shootout, has not been included in Scaloni’s current squad.
“Argentina have many quality players, but their biggest strength lies in their teamwork and unity. That team cohesion was their key weapon at the 2022 World Cup,” explained Henry.
He added that Messi’s leadership continues to inspire the squad both on and off the pitch. “Messi’s presence makes a difference. His aura lifts the entire team,” he said.
With their experience, status, and balanced squad composition, Henry remains optimistic that Argentina can repeat their success from Qatar 2022. “I’m confident, but football is unpredictable. Every nation is strong — Spain, for example, also has a real chance,” he concluded.
