Featured Story: Wendy House’s Microbakery Is a Viral Hit, and It Started in a Costco Greenhouse

Wendy House is the owner of her neighborhood bakery. But it’s not your average bakery—it’s not on a main street, there’s no line of customers, no cash registers and she’s even solo staffed. That’s because the bakery is located just a few feet away from her front door.

Little House Bread Co. is what she calls the humble microbakery located in her driveway. Two years ago, it all started as a Costco greenhouse holding sourdough bread. It was a passion project first and foremost, but after a viral Instagram Reel, it quickly became profitable.

“I remember my husband saying in the beginning, ‘You should really have a business plan if you’re going to really go for this,’” House tells EatingWell. “And I was like, ‘Oh, this is just a hobby. I don’t need a business plan.’ Turns out I probably did.”

The 3-by-4-foot greenhouse expanded into a respectable walk-in, and now regular customers are reserving loaves of fresh sourdough in order to get their hands on it. Drive-up customers can also snag fresh cookies, scones and seasonal desserts, as House constantly feels inspired to switch up her inventory.

“Blueberry lemon scones can sell week after week. They are a huge seller, and they sell out all of the time,” she laughs. “And I try to keep a couple [sourdough] inclusion loaves fluctuating with seasonal flavors. So at Christmas, that might be a gingerbread flavor.”

The bakery runs on an honor system, meaning that customers can walk up, scan the QR code to pay, grab their goods and leave—it’s based on trusting the customer will pay, and House intends on keeping it like this.

“In the beginning, it was because I knew almost everybody that was coming to my driveway because it was through friends and word of mouth,” she explains. “But as it grew, there are now strangers coming, and I left it that way…It started from my heart, to have purpose, to connect with the community. It was never about commerce for me. It was always about community.”

A mom of four, House plans on continuing her stay-at-home lifestyle, now working remotely thanks to her successful once-hobby. She’s also helped others in her community to make their DIY microbakeries in order to share the love—and now offers a digital mentorship program to assist home bakers that are looking to start their own.
