WhatsApp may soon introduce a new privacy feature for its users. According to reports, the company is working on a feature that allows text messages to be read only once. Once opened, the message will automatically disappear and cannot be viewed again.
A report by WABetaInfo, a website that tracks WhatsApp updates, indicates that this feature was spotted during development in version 2.26.22.7 of WhatsApp Beta for Android. However, the feature is not yet available even to beta testers.
How will the new feature work?
According to the report, after typing a message, users will be able to access additional options by long-pressing the 'Send' button. A new option labeled 'Send as View Once' may appear there.
If a user selects this option, the recipient will be able to read the message only once. As soon as the message is opened, it will vanish from the chat and cannot be accessed again.
'View Once' feature already exists.
WhatsApp already offers the 'View Once' feature for photos, videos, and voice messages. Media files sent using this feature cannot be opened again after being viewed once.
Additionally, 'View Once' photos and videos cannot be saved, forwarded, or exported. In many instances, WhatsApp also blocks screenshots and screen recordings.
If this functionality is extended to text messages, users will be able to share passwords, OTPs, personal information, or other sensitive details more securely.
Work on the 'Spoiler Message' feature too.
Reports suggest that WhatsApp is also working on another new feature called 'Spoiler Messages.' With this feature, a portion of the message will appear blurred, and the user will need to tap on it to read the content. This feature could prove useful for sharing passwords, verification codes, or other private information.
WhatsApp has not yet announced a launch date for these features. It is expected that they will first be released to beta testers before being rolled out to all users.
