AC Milan’s star player has stirred controversy just days before the 2026 World Cup, putting the Portugal national team in a difficult position.
According to reports, Portugal entered the final stretch before the 2026 World Cup with a positive result, defeating Chile 2-1 in a friendly match held in Oeiras, Lisbon, on Sunday (7 June 2026).
However, behind the 2-1 victory over Chile, all eyes turned to one individual — AC Milan forward Rafael Leao.
The striker, who is rumoured to be leaving Serie A soon, became the centre of attention after receiving a red card for engaging in a fight with a Chilean player.
The incident occurred just before the end of the first half. It began with a clash between Joao Cancelo and Chile’s Faundez.
The already heated atmosphere escalated further when Chilean defender Ivan Roman joined the commotion.
Leao, who initially approached to separate the players, lost his composure. Replay footage showed the 27-year-old throwing a punch towards Roman’s face.
Italian referee Luca Zufferli paused the match to review the situation before ultimately showing straight red cards to both Leao and Roman.
Cristiano Ronaldo’s attempt to discuss the decision with the referee proved futile. Leao merely smiled as he walked off the pitch after being sent off.
The incident immediately raised concerns within the Portugal camp. With the 2026 World Cup fast approaching, Leao’s suspension poses a major headache for coach Roberto Martinez, as the forward is considered a key figure in his tactical setup.
Disciplinary Issues Back in the Spotlight
The red card only reinforced the perception that Leao still struggles with discipline and emotional control.
In recent weeks, Leao’s name has been widely discussed in Italy.
He is reportedly frustrated with his current situation at AC Milan and is said to be seeking a new challenge in either the Premier League or La Liga.
Last season was far from smooth for the winger. He missed several matches due to suspensions and even lost his starting spot under Milan’s new coach, Massimiliano Allegri.
Therefore, the Portugal match was supposed to be a golden opportunity for Leao to showcase his talent on the international stage and boost his market value ahead of the summer transfer window.
Instead, things went in the opposite direction. Rather than making a difference on the field, Leao exited early and created additional problems for Portugal’s coaching staff.
Facing Possible Suspension at the Start of the World Cup?
According to regulations, a red card issued for violent conduct can lead to a ban of up to three matches.
If fully enforced, Leao could miss Portugal’s final friendly against Nigeria and the first two group-stage matches of the 2026 World Cup against the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Uzbekistan.
In previous cases, FIFA has sometimes reduced the suspension by placing part of the penalty under probation.
Cristiano Ronaldo once faced a similar situation after being sent off against the Republic of Ireland last November.
On that occasion, he served only a one-match ban, missing the game against Armenia, while the remainder of the suspension was deferred.
If FIFA applies the same approach, Leao’s chances of featuring in the group stage of the World Cup remain promising.
