Initially there was a consideration of naming it 'Batwara 1947', but later it was decided to keep it only 'Batwara'. However, to get the rights of this name, the team needed legal process and rights clearance, because this name was already registered.

The report quoted sources as saying that this title was related to late producer Salim Akhtar's film 'Batwara' (1989), and its rights were with his family. Aamir Khan himself took the initiative and met Salim Akhtar's son Samad. His mother and other family members were also present in this meeting.
