Rafael Leao: Why Manchester United Could Face a Dilemma Over a £43 Million Move

It has become an open secret that Manchester United’s top transfer goal this summer is to overhaul their midfield setup.

The process has already started, with a deal for Ederson finalised and two additional midfield reinforcements anticipated to follow soon.

Even though a substantial portion of United’s transfer funds has been allocated to the midfield, there could still be space for other signings. The left-wing position, in particular, has drawn notable attention.

Currently, Manchester United lack a true left-winger within the squad, and there is an increasing sense within the club that this situation must be addressed.

According to reports cited by The Peoples Person, Rafael Leao has emerged as a potential opportunistic target for the 20-time English champions as they look to strengthen that flank.

Leao is reportedly seeking to leave AC Milan, and with the Serie A club apparently prepared to part ways with a player of his calibre for around £43 million, the deal appears to be a tempting opportunity.

The Portuguese forward, who has been praised by Zlatan Ibrahimović for bringing “magic” to the field, has already hinted at being open to a move to Old Trafford. However, INEOS have yet to make a formal approach, and while they deliberate on that choice, they have been cautioned about potential risks.

Italian football analyst Paolo De Paola, speaking to Tuttomercatoweb, explained why a player like Leao might not necessarily fit into the Manchester United dressing room dynamic.

“I believe there’s a faction within Milan, led by Leao, that hasn’t offered much support to the coach,” said De Paola, responding to Leao’s complaint that head coach Massimiliano Allegri was deploying him out of position.

“Pulisic, Loftus-Cheek, Fofana, and Tomori also raised concerns in the last match.

“Allegri’s typically strong player management wasn’t visible; he was let down in the crucial game that would have secured Champions League qualification.”

Sky Sport presenter Fabio Caressa echoed similar sentiments in response to Leao’s comments about his relationship with Allegri.

“When Leao said he gave everything to Milan, the likely reaction would have been: ‘We haven’t really seen that over the past three years,’” Caressa remarked via TMW.

While Leao’s talent is unquestionable—and a change of environment might help him rediscover his peak form—serious questions persist about other aspects of his profile.

His technical ability is beyond doubt, but many observers are more concerned about his temperament. The hesitation surrounding his potential signing has less to do with his footballing skills and more with doubts about his mentality and commitment.

Whether Manchester United decide to overlook those red flags remains uncertain, but INEOS will have a challenging decision to make regarding this possible £43 million move.
