Russell Martin has reportedly become Leicester City’s leading candidate as the club moves closer to finalising the appointment of a new head coach.

Leicester City are gearing up for a significant rebuild following back-to-back relegations, which means they will compete in League One next season.

This marks a dramatic decline for the 2016 Premier League champions, leaving supporters deeply frustrated with how the club has been managed over recent years.

Owner Khun Top and Chief Football Officer Jon Rudkin have faced the bulk of criticism for the Foxes’ downfall, putting immense pressure on the club’s leadership to make the right decisions during the summer.

The most pivotal choice is the appointment of a new head coach, following Gary Rowett’s departure after Leicester’s relegation. Rowett had taken over from Marti Cifuentes for the final stretch of the season.

Since Rowett’s exit, Leicester have carried out an extensive search for a new manager, with several names being linked to the position.

However, recent developments suggest that Leicester have made substantial progress. According to journalist John Percy of the Telegraph, Russell Martin has emerged as the top target for the East Midlands side.

Percy reports that the former Rangers boss is in ‘advanced talks’ with the Foxes. Although a final agreement is yet to be reached, Martin is believed to be ‘seriously considering’ taking charge at the King Power Stadium.

The 40-year-old has been without a club since being dismissed by Rangers in October after a disappointing run in the Scottish Premiership.

Before his stint in Glasgow, Martin had built a promising reputation as a manager, guiding Southampton to Premier League promotion and previously impressing at MK Dons and Swansea City.

Martin’s tactical philosophy has been divisive, with critics arguing that he struggled to adjust his possession-based approach during Southampton’s Premier League campaign.

Given his mixed managerial record, some Leicester fans may initially oppose his potential appointment. Nevertheless, with his reputation needing repair after the Rangers spell, Leicester could present him with an ideal opportunity to rebuild his career.

The Foxes will begin next season with a clean slate, as numerous players are expected to depart and academy graduates will take on more prominent roles. This could allow Martin the chance to implement his preferred playing style with a receptive squad.

If Martin succeeds in establishing his brand of dominant, attacking football, it might serve Leicester well as they seek a long-term plan to recover from several disappointing years.

However, results will remain crucial. A club of Leicester’s stature must aim for immediate promotion, but competing in League One could provide the breathing space to put a solid footballing philosophy in place for the future.

Martin’s familiarity with League One also stands as a positive, potentially helping him settle quickly if he takes over. Regardless of who is appointed, the incoming manager will require strong backing from the ownership, as Leicester prepare for a critical transfer window.
