Decisive Action Against Illegal Infiltration

India has initiated a robust and decisive campaign to combat Bangladeshi infiltration. The Border Security Force (BSF), along with state police and administrative agencies, is actively identifying, monitoring, and facilitating the return of Bangladeshi nationals residing illegally in India. Recent activities in border areas such as Cooch Behar, Mekhliganj, Changrabandha, Malda, Murshidabad, and North 24 Parganas indicate that India is no longer willing to compromise on border security and national interests.

Recent Attempts Foiled

Recently, the BSF thwarted an attempt to illegally bring ten Bangladeshi nationals into India near the Mahandi border post in the Mekhliganj area of Cooch Behar. Among those apprehended were women and children. The security forces promptly deployed additional personnel to enhance surveillance along the border, successfully preventing this infiltration attempt. BJP legislator Dadhiram Rai, during his visit to border areas, asserted that India's borders are secure and that no infiltrators will be allowed entry. He also emphasized that if Bangladesh refuses to repatriate its citizens, India cannot bear the burden.

Bangladesh's Response

On the other hand, the Bangladesh Border Guard has accused India of attempting to send individuals into Bangladeshi territory. Reports have emerged from areas like Lalmonirhat, Panchagarh, Naogaon, and Chapainawabganj, where several individuals were reportedly stopped at the zero line of the border. According to Bangladeshi officials, over seventy people are stranded in the border region. While India has not officially responded to these allegations, it is evident that the country is adopting a stringent policy regarding illegal infiltrators.

Ongoing Discussions Amid Tensions

Amid rising tensions at the border, attempts have been made for dialogue between the border forces of both nations, although consensus has not been reached in many instances. Nevertheless, India has intensified patrols and surveillance along the border. A border coordination meeting between India and Bangladesh is scheduled to take place in Delhi soon, where these issues are expected to be discussed in detail.

Voluntary Returns Increasing

A significant aspect of this campaign is that a large number of illegal Bangladeshi nationals are now voluntarily approaching border posts to return to their country. Hundreds of individuals have gathered at various border locations, including the Hakimpur check post in North 24 Parganas, expressing their desire to return to Bangladesh. Many who have lived in cities like Delhi, Mumbai, and Gujarat for years are now compelled to return due to fears of action and arrest. Temporary detention centers have been established in districts like Malda and Murshidabad by the state government, where individuals are being processed for return after verification of identity and biometric data.

Government's Firm Stance

The central government has also made it clear that strict actions will be taken against those residing in India without valid documents. Union Home Minister Amit Shah stated that individuals who voluntarily return to their country will not face legal action in India. He praised the West Bengal administration for expediting the fencing work along the Bangladesh border. Additionally, the West Bengal administration has adopted a tough stance against illegal infiltration, deciding to hand over apprehended infiltrators to the police and facilitate their return. This measure is deemed essential for maintaining national security and social balance.

A Matter of National Sovereignty

India's approach is not merely a security issue; it is also tied to the country's sovereignty and law enforcement. Illegal infiltration has long posed serious challenges to population balance, employment, crime, and national security.
