New Delhi: Captain Shubman Gill and KL Rahul hit centuries as India posted a strong 368/3 at stumps on Day 1 of the one-off Test match against Afghanistan at the Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium in New Chandigarh on Saturday, June 6. Apart from Gill and Rahul, Sai Sudharsan and Rishabh Pant also made crucial contributions with well-compiled fifties.
Rahul defended resolutely, while captain Shubman Gill batted with intent throughout the day as the Men in Blue produced a batting masterclass against a highly spirited but relatively inexperienced Afghanistan bowling attack. Gill smashed his 11th Test century, smashing 11 boundaries and a six, while Rahul was dismissed for 100 runs by Ziaur Rahman Sharifi.
Sai Sudharsan missed out on a hundred and was removed by Saleem Safi for 81 runs despite getting two reprieves, while Rishabh Pant hit three maximums and two boundaries to complete his 70-ball fifty. It is highly unlikely that the hosts will bat for more than a session and a half on the second day before declaration and unleashing their bowlers on Afghanistan.
The surface had something for the spinners, and it will not be a surprise if the match does not go to the fifth day. For Afghanistan, Mohammad Saleem picked up two wickets, while Ziaur Rahman Sharifi took one.
