Shubman Gill has continued his sensational Test career as the India captain hammered his 11th Test century during the one-off Test against Afghanistan in New Chandigarh. The right-hander brought up the milestone off just 138 balls and remained unbeaten at stumps on Day 1.
This was Gill's sixth century as India captain. This century has seen him leapfrog former India captains MS Dhoni, Sourav Ganguly and Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi in the chart for most centuries by India captains.
This ton was also scored during a fruitful opening day for the Indian team as they finished the day at 368 for 3, after opting to bat at the Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium.
Gill Climbs India's Captaincy Record List
Captaincy has been one of the biggest upsides for Indian cricket in recent times. Shubman Gill since taking charge as the Test captain has continued to lead from the front.
The 11th Test ton has been his sixth as captain for the Indian side, and in doing so he has now gone above former India captains MS Dhoni, Sourav Ganguly and Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi for Test centuries.
Only Virat Kohli, Sunil Gavaskar, Mohammad Azharuddin and Sachin Tendulkar now have more Test centuries as captain than Gill. However considering the age and current form of the right-hander, the Indian captain is certain to climb up the list in the years to come.
Most Test Centuries as India Captain
- 20 - Virat Kohli (113 inns)
- 11 - Sunil Gavaskar (74 inns)
- 9 - Mohd. Azharuddin (78 inns)
- 7 - Sachin Tendulkar (43 inns)
- 6 - Shubman Gill (15 inns)*
The innings once again justified his ability to keep captaincy duties aside and continue being the top batter for the Indian team.

India Build Strong Position on Day One
Gill's hundred was preceded by excellent innings by KL Rahul and Sai Sudharsan. KL Rahul smashed a fantastic hundred off 165 deliveries before getting dismissed at 100 just after reaching the milestone. Sai Sudharsan brought up his 50 off 72 deliveries and ended his inning on 81 runs off 104 balls.
After Rahul was dismissed, which happened when India were 247/3, Gill and Rishabh Pant ensured that Afghanistan could not grab another wicket, with Pant completing his half century, and still at the crease at 50* from 62 balls.
Gill's century was laced with 11 boundaries and one six, with him keeping the scoring rate high throughout the last session, with his partnership with Pant, taking India into a solid position by the end of the day with 7 wickets to spare.
India's captain has carried his phenomenal white-ball form in Test cricket as well. After an excellent season in the IPL 2026, he has begun his captaincy journey successfully and looks one of the key players of the Indian team. His ton yesterday was another significant individual achievement and a testament to his form across formats.
