Although in case of serious or long-lasting problems, doctor’s advice is necessary, but in mild symptoms, some home remedies can help in providing relief. There are many things mentioned in Ayurveda and traditional home remedies which are considered helpful in loosening phlegm and relaxing the respiratory system.
Taking steam can be beneficial
Steam inhalation is a popular home remedy to loosen phlegm accumulated in the lungs and respiratory tract. The hot steam moistens the respiratory tract, which can thin the mucus and make it easier to expel.
For this, take hot water in a vessel and cover the head with a towel and take steam for 5 to 10 minutes. Keep in mind that the water should not be too hot so that there is no risk of burning.

Natural anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties are found in ginger. Honey can help in soothing the throat. Consuming a little ginger juice mixed with one spoon honey can provide relief from cough and throat problems.
However, honey should not be given to children below one year of age.

An element called curcumin present in turmeric is known for its anti-inflammatory properties. Drinking lukewarm milk mixed with half a teaspoon of turmeric before sleeping at night can help in relaxing the throat and respiratory system.
This remedy is also considered helpful in supporting the body’s immunity.
Warm water and salt gargles
If there is sore throat or burning sensation along with phlegm, then gargling with lukewarm salt water can be beneficial. It helps clear the throat and reduce discomfort.
Gargling 2 to 3 times a day can provide relief to the throat and also reduce the risk of infection.
drink plenty of warm fluids
In case of cough problem, it is very important to keep the body hydrated. Lukewarm water, herbal tea, soup or other warm beverages may help thin the mucus.
Experts also recommend taking enough fluids during cough and phlegm, so that the respiratory system can function better.
Keep these things in mind also
- Stay away from smoking and smoke.
- Use a mask in dusty and polluted environments.
- Get enough rest.
- Keep the room clean and ventilated.
