The Central Government runs several schemes to improve the health of pregnant women and newborns. One such scheme is the Pradhan Mantri Matru Vandana Yojana (PMMVY). Under this scheme, financial assistance is provided to pregnant women and lactating mothers. If you or a woman in your family is pregnant, information about this scheme could be very useful to you. Let us understand in simple terms what this scheme is, who is eligible for it, and how to apply for the Pradhan Mantri Matru Vandana Yojana.
What is the Pradhan Mantri Matru Vandana Yojana?
The Pradhan Mantri Matru Vandana Yojana is a government scheme under the Ministry of Women and Child Development. Its objective is to provide financial assistance to women during pregnancy and childbirth.
What is the amount of assistance provided?
Assistance of ₹5,000 is provided upon the birth of the first child. This amount is disbursed in two installments.
To receive the first installment, registration of the pregnancy is mandatory. At least one Antenatal Check-up (ANC) must be undergone within six months of the Last Menstrual Period (LMP). This check-up must be conducted at an Anganwadi center or a government-recognized health center. After the check-up, the first installment of ₹3,000 is released.
The second installment of ₹2,000 is provided upon registering the child's birth and ensuring the child receives all necessary vaccinations up to 14 weeks after birth.
Additionally, if the delivery takes place in a government hospital or a registered private nursing home, the woman also receives the financial assistance provided under the Janani Suraksha Yojana (JSY). Thus, the total benefit can amount to approximately ₹6,000.
What benefits are available for the second child?
If the second child is a girl, the woman receives additional assistance of ₹6,000.
Which women can avail the benefits of the scheme?
To avail the benefits of the scheme, the woman must be at least 19 years of age. She must also be pregnant and experiencing a loss of income or wages due to the pregnancy. Women belonging to the following categories are also eligible:
