KEPRI – Portugal is aiming to win the 2026 World Cup, with national team icon Cristiano Ronaldo seeking to complete his collection of major titles after lifting the Euro 2016 trophy.

The setbacks faced by coach Roberto Martinez’s squad in Euro 2004 and the 2022 World Cup still linger over the journey of the team known as the Selecao das Quinas, or the Five Shields. Ronaldo, aged 41, is one of the oldest players competing in this World Cup.

The inclusion of the star often referred to as CR7 has raised questions about whether his physical condition and stamina can endure the intensity of the tournament. Coach Roberto Martinez clarified that Ronaldo’s role extends beyond the pitch — he is expected to act as a motivator and role model for younger players, drawing from his vast experience of participating in six World Cup tournaments.

Football analyst from Kepri, Chris Triwinasis, noted that the Spanish coach values Ronaldo’s presence as a major positive influence within the squad. With Vitinha (Paris Saint-Germain), Bruno Fernandes (Manchester United), and Joan Neves (Paris Saint-Germain) orchestrating play in midfield, Portugal’s attacking structure appears formidable.

The attacking trio of Rafael Leao (AC Milan), Gonçalo Ramos, and Pedro Neto provides a powerful offensive threat, posing serious challenges for any opposition they face.

Portugal has been drawn into Group K alongside Colombia, Uzbekistan, and the Democratic Republic of Congo.

“Uzbekistan, representing Asia, plays with a European style and impressive pace, which will be their main strength in their World Cup debut,” Triwinasis explained on Friday (June 5, 2026). He added that Italian coach Fabio Cannavaro understands Uzbekistan’s playing style deeply. As a former defender, Cannavaro has instilled strong defensive discipline in the team known as the White Wolves.

Colombia, meanwhile, arrives with renewed energy. The performance of Luis Diaz with Bayern Munich has shown promise in breaking down opposing defenses.

Still featuring James Rodriguez — who shone during the 2022 World Cup — and goalkeeper Vargas, coach Nestor Lorenzo’s (Argentina) side is widely tipped to advance alongside Portugal to the round of 32. The final Group K standings are expected to be decided in the third and final matches on June 28, when Portugal meets Colombia and Uzbekistan faces the Democratic Republic of Congo.

“In terms of rankings, there is only a slight difference between Uzbekistan and DR Congo — Congo sits at 46th while Uzbekistan is ranked 50th,” Triwinasis added. Should the two sides draw, Group K would likely see Portugal and Colombia progress to the next stage.
