New Delhi: Neymar has not travelled with Brazil’s national football team to Cleveland for their FIFA World Cup preparatory clash against Egypt scheduled on Saturday, June 6, as confirmed by the Brazilian Football Confederation. The football association stated on Thursday that the 34-year-old forward would stay back in New Jersey to continue his treatment.
According to the team’s medical staff, Neymar is expected to be sidelined for around three weeks because of a calf injury he sustained recently. Brazil is set to face Morocco in their opening fixture of the 2026 World Cup in New Jersey, but it remains uncertain whether Neymar will recover in time to be available for that match.
The decision to include Neymar in the 26-member World Cup squad was seen as a significant gamble given his recent injury record. The star forward, who holds the record as Brazil’s all-time top scorer with 79 goals, has struggled to regain full form since tearing the ACL in his left knee during a World Cup qualifying match in October 2023.
“He can still build up his fitness before the first game of the World Cup. He has vast experience in tournaments like this, the affection of the team, and his presence helps foster a positive atmosphere within the squad,” head coach Carlos Ancelotti had remarked last month.
This season, Neymar has made only eight appearances for Santos FC, contributing four goals and two assists. As per FIFA regulations, teams are permitted to replace an injured player up to 24 hours before their first match of the tournament. If Neymar manages to feature in the competition, it will mark his fourth World Cup appearance.
Marquinhos to Captain Brazil in the World Cup
Earlier this week, Brazil appointed 32-year-old defender Marquinhos as team captain. The Paris Saint-Germain defender expressed his pride and gratitude upon being handed the responsibility.
“You think about all the legendary captains who have worn this armband before, so I feel extremely honoured and happy. Being captain is not just about putting on the armband and playing football — it carries a much deeper meaning,” Marquinhos said.
Following their clash with Morocco, Brazil will play against Haiti on June 20 in Philadelphia and then face Scotland on June 25 in Miami as part of their World Cup build-up schedule.
