Washington/Tel Aviv/Beirut/Tehran. After the tension in the Middle East and Iran’s attack on Kuwait, America seems to be successful in preventing conflict in Lebanon to a great extent. Tel Aviv and Beirut agreed on Wednesday to restart the ceasefire here and create several buffer zones (pilot protection zone, security strip, military free zone) inside Lebanon. This agreement strictly states that the interference and entry of Iran-backed terrorist group Hezbollah in the Pilot Security Area will be completely prohibited.
The US, Lebanon and Israel issued a joint statement after the fourth round of US-mediated talks. It added that the ceasefire is contingent on “a complete cessation of Hezbollah’s firing and the withdrawal of all its operatives from areas south of the Litani River.” The statement claimed that the Lebanese Army would take full control of the buffer zone.
According to the report of CBS News, after this announcement in Washington, Israel has attacked several places in southern Lebanon with drones. Lebanon’s official news agency National News Agency gave this information on Thursday. After the announcement of this agreement on Wednesday, Israel’s Defense Minister Israel Katz said on Thursday that if Hezbollah breaks the latest ceasefire agreement with Lebanon, then Israel Defense Forces (IDF) will attack more strongly. He said that the Israeli army will not retreat from the Beaufort area. Israel’s far-right leader Itamar Ben-Gvir has called resuming the ceasefire a serious mistake.
Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has given a harsh reaction to the agreement between Lebanon and Israel. Araghchi said that the avenues of dialogue with America are still open. If Israel launches an attack on Beirut against Iran-backed Hezbollah, the conflict could be fully renewed. “Negotiations with the Americans have not stopped. Messages have been exchanged on the need to stop attacks on Beirut, but there has been no concrete progress in the dialogue process,” Iran’s Tasnim news agency quoted Araghchi as telling Lebanon’s Al Mayadeen TV.
