Bayern Munich have reportedly agreed to meet Manchester United’s £26 million asking price for Marcus Rashford following discussions between the two clubs, with the transfer now described as ‘pending’.
Rashford recorded 14 goals and 14 assists during his season-long loan spell at Barcelona, where he impressed across competitions. However, the Catalan club have decided not to activate the £26 million option to buy the 28-year-old permanently after completing the £70 million signing of fellow Englishman Anthony Gordon from Newcastle United.
Barcelona have until June 15 to trigger that purchase clause but have shown no signs of doing so. Reports suggest the La Liga side are instead exploring either another loan deal or a reduction in the transfer fee to keep Rashford beyond the upcoming World Cup.
Manchester United may now have a new destination lined up for Rashford this summer. According to a report by The Sun, Bayern Munich are ‘willing to match’ the Red Devils’ £34.5 million valuation of the England international.
The report also mentioned that Rashford’s large salary package — approximately £300,000 per week — is proving to be a major obstacle in finalising a transfer, with Bayern Munich reportedly less inclined to meet those wage demands.
Sources indicate that Bayern are ‘reluctant to pay those wages’ since Rashford would not automatically be a first-choice starter at the Allianz Arena, where Luis Diaz is expected to occupy the left-wing position.
According to Spanish outlet MARCA, Rashford has shown a willingness to ‘reduce his salary’ to push through a move, though this appears to relate primarily to his preference for staying at Barcelona.
MARCA added that Bayern are ‘ready to pay’ the £26 million fee requested by Manchester United and have already communicated this intent to the Premier League club. The report described Bayern as ‘bidding aggressively’ for the winger.
The completion of the transfer is said to depend on whether Barcelona decide to trigger their purchase clause. Despite reports from Germany suggesting that Bayern have already contacted Rashford’s representatives, MARCA refuted this claim, insisting that if such contact had occurred, the answer would have been clear — Rashford’s focus remains solely on Barcelona.
The publication further stated: ‘His determination to remain at the Spotify Camp Nou is absolute, as is his dedication to Hansi Flick’s team. Rashford has informed all involved parties that he will explore every possible option to continue at Barça, whether through another loan deal, similar to the 2025–26 season, or a permanent transfer. He is prepared to lower his salary and make personal sacrifices. Until the possibility of staying at Spotify Camp Nou is completely dismissed, he will not consider joining any other club.’
With Gordon brought in to play on the left wing — Rashford’s usual position — some speculated on potential tension between the two when they met up for England’s national team duties in the United States. However, Gordon has made it clear that Rashford has been nothing but supportive, describing him as ‘very caring’ and saying he has been sharing insights about life at Barcelona ahead of the World Cup.
Speaking to talkSPORT, Gordon said: “He was just telling me how great the lads are there, the team spirit they have, which I had already heard about from people at Barça.”
He added, “I’m really excited to join up with them. He was also giving me advice about the city and where to live.”
