Manchester United’s reported pursuit of FC Porto’s emerging winger William Gomes first surfaced in May, sparking speculation ahead of the upcoming transfer window.
As per Spanish publication AS, the Red Devils have made enquiries regarding the availability of Gomes, who has been one of the standout performers in the Portuguese league this season.
The 20-year-old’s impressive displays have drawn attention from several elite European clubs, and now Porto’s position on his potential departure has become clearer.
According to a report from Portuguese outlet Correio da Manhã, relayed by Sport Witness, Manchester United are among the clubs currently monitoring William Gomes closely.
Gomes, who has earned comparisons to Luis Diaz due to his pace and dribbling prowess, is tied to a contract with Porto until 2029. That deal contains a release clause valued at €80 million (£69.1m).
However, it is understood that Porto would be open to negotiating a transfer for approximately €60 million (£51.6m). Such a move would yield a significant profit for the Dragons, considering they acquired the Brazilian talent from São Paulo in early 2025 for just €10 million.
Reports suggest that Porto’s valuation and willingness to engage in talks have already been communicated through their network of agents and intermediaries.
Porto legend Pepê has heaped praise on Gomes, describing him as “an incredible player, a very dedicated boy, who has spectacular ambition.”
Standing at 5’7″, Gomes is capable of playing effectively on either wing and is widely regarded as one of the most promising young attackers in Europe. His price tag, while substantial, is viewed by many as fair given his potential. Nonetheless, Manchester United’s current transfer priorities lie elsewhere.
According to The Athletic, United are “evaluating the left side of their team during this window, but the full-back position appears to be the most likely area for reinforcement.”
Michael Carrick has been impressed by the performances of Matheus Cunha and Patrick Dorgu, both of whom have shown strong form. It may therefore make strategic sense for United to allow the duo another season to compete for a place in the starting lineup while continuing to monitor Gomes’s development in Portugal.
