SRIPOKU.COM - Former Sriwijaya FC Manager (2006–2008) Brigadier General (Ret.) Amalsyah Tarmizi has predicted that France and England will be the two finalists in the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup.
“In my prediction, a European team will be the champion, and the two most likely nations to reach the final are France and England,” said Amalsyah Tarmizi in an interview with Sripoku.com on Wednesday (3 June 2026).
Amalsyah Tarmizi, who is also fondly remembered for his role as the Head of the South Sumatra Contingent at PON XVI 2004 and PON XVII 2008, remains confident that France and England will make it to the final, though he does not rule out the possibility of another team emerging as champions.
The former Aslog Kodam II/Sriwijaya and Danzidam II/Sriwijaya official also mentioned several key players from each national team who are expected to shine at the 2026 World Cup.
“But football is unpredictable, just like in 2022 when no one thought Argentina would win. Still, I’m backing France and England to be the top contenders for the World Cup title,” said the former Kasrem 044/Gapo and Dandim 0418/Palembang.
He again noted that both France and England have standout talents who could play decisive roles in the tournament. “For England, Bukayo Saka stands out, especially considering his age. Meanwhile, for Argentina, Lionel Messi is still active. In France, there’s Kylian Mbappe,” he added.
Historically, France and England have consistently been among the top contenders in World Cup tournaments. According to various simulations and betting markets, the two European powerhouses remain favourites to win, alongside other giants such as Spain and Argentina.
Below is a brief overview of the strength of both teams:
1. France
France boasts exceptional squad depth and has always been a title challenger. As the runner-up in Qatar 2022, Didier Deschamps’ side features a blend of seasoned stars and bright young talents dominating Europe’s top leagues.
2. England
England is currently enjoying a golden generation regarded as highly mature and balanced. With a lineup of sharp attackers and creative midfielders, the Three Lions are widely tipped by various prediction models, including those from Opta, to go deep into the tournament, possibly all the way to the final.
