Tough news for Trent Alexander-Arnold? Real Madrid eye Denzel Dumfries as right-back target ahead of 2026 World Cup

Real Madrid have reportedly identified a new right-back target as they prepare for next season, potentially creating competition for Trent Alexander-Arnold. According to reports, the Spanish powerhouses are interested in signing Inter Milan defender Denzel Dumfries through a budget-friendly deal, while also progressing in talks for Liverpool’s centre-back Ibrahima Konate. The club aims to finalise both high-profile moves before the 2026 World Cup kicks off.

Alexander-Arnold’s World Cup disappointment

As per Marca, Real Madrid are currently evaluating their defensive structure following an uneven debut campaign from Alexander-Arnold. The 27-year-old shared the right-back role with veteran Dani Carvajal last season. However, with Carvajal leaving upon the expiration of his contract on June 30, Los Blancos are left with a major gap to fill. Alexander-Arnold featured in 30 matches, delivering five assists across 1,794 minutes, but his progress was hampered by repeated muscle injuries. To make matters worse, England head coach Thomas Tuchel has left him out of the final World Cup squad, instead preferring Tino Livramento. As a result, Real Madrid are determined to bring in a dependable option to strengthen their right flank.

Dumfries seen as the perfect addition

To reinforce their defensive line and compensate for Carvajal’s departure, Real Madrid have turned their attention to Denzel Dumfries. The Dutch international, who will represent the Netherlands at the World Cup, offers an appealing blend of athleticism and experience. Although Dumfries’ contract with Inter runs until 2028, the Serie A champions are reportedly open to negotiating a modest transfer fee. The 30-year-old delivered a solid season, tallying five goals and two assists in 28 appearances. Across his Inter career, he has played 207 matches, scoring 27 goals and providing 28 assists. Madrid’s management value his strength, experience, and reliability, seeing him as an ideal candidate to compete directly with Alexander-Arnold.

Mbappe backing a Konate reunion

Simultaneously, Real Madrid are prioritising defensive reinforcements at centre-back, with Ibrahima Konate emerging as their top target. The Liverpool defender has declined to renew his contract, prompting Madrid to fast-track negotiations that began earlier this year. Interestingly, Kylian Mbappe is reportedly playing a key role in persuading his compatriot. Both are currently part of the France squad preparing for the World Cup, and Mbappe is said to be personally urging Konate to join him in Spain. Konate humorously acknowledged the effort, saying, “Mbappe calls me every two hours...” The potential signing has already received approval from Jose Mourinho, who is expected to take over as manager following the upcoming presidential elections.

Next steps for Real Madrid

Real Madrid intend to complete the signings of both Dumfries and Konate before the World Cup begins in the United States, Mexico, and Canada. Securing these two defensive reinforcements early would allow the club to avoid mid-tournament market complications and ensure that their incoming manager starts the 2025-26 season with a fully prepared and balanced squad capable of challenging for major honours.
