Manchester United are reportedly on the verge of finalising an agreement with Atalanta’s dynamic midfielder Ederson, as the club looks to initiate a comprehensive rebuild of its midfield setup.

Following recent managerial changes, the Red Devils have started acting swiftly behind the scenes to secure top-tier reinforcements early in the summer transfer window.

The 26-year-old Brazilian has emerged as the leading candidate to anchor United’s midfield under the guidance of Michael Carrick.

According to The Mirror, United are close to sealing a deal for Ederson, who is expected to fill the void left by Casemiro following his departure from Old Trafford at the end of the 2025/26 season.

Director of Football Jason Wilcox and the recruitment team have moved quickly to beat off competition from Atletico Madrid by offering a lucrative contract estimated at around €4.5 million per year.

Although Atalanta initially demanded a higher fee, Ederson’s contract entering its final year has allowed United to negotiate a transfer expected to total approximately £38 million.

The Europa League-winning midfielder has spent four seasons honing his game in Serie A, and personal terms are not anticipated to hinder his move to the Premier League.

Ederson Dos Santos’ career statistics, as per Transfermarkt, reflect his consistent growth and versatility in midfield roles.

United’s determined pursuit of Ederson highlights the evident gap left at the base of their midfield structure.

Veteran midfielder Casemiro bid farewell to the club at the end of the season, departing as a celebrated figure after producing a string of strong performances under Carrick.

With Casemiro’s exit and the likelihood of Manuel Ugarte being sold, Carrick aims to reinforce his starting XI with a high-energy, press-resistant presence as United prepare for a demanding return to the UEFA Champions League.

The midfield core is set to revolve around rising star Kobbie Mainoo, who established himself as a key first-team player during Carrick’s tenure.

Reports further indicate that Ederson will not be the only midfield signing this summer, as United are planning to add at least two new midfielders to their roster.

The club is also actively keeping tabs on Brighton’s Carlos Baleba and West Ham’s Mateus Fernandes as potential options.
