Manchester United have reportedly tabled an offer to sign Ibrahima Konaté during the upcoming summer transfer window, though the Liverpool centre-back is understood to favour a move to Real Madrid. Reports from Spain indicate that United are among several clubs who have approached the French international following confirmation that he will depart Liverpool when his contract expires.
Chelsea and Manchester City are also said to have expressed interest, yet Konaté’s top preference appears to be joining Real Madrid.
According to Reuters, the 27-year-old defender will leave Liverpool after five seasons, with negotiations over a contract extension breaking down due to differences over salary terms.
The development is particularly notable given the fierce rivalry between Manchester United and Liverpool. Any player moving directly between the two clubs inevitably sparks major attention and debate.
Even though Konaté will be available as a free agent, the emotional and symbolic weight of such a transfer would be hard to overlook.
From United’s perspective, the interest makes sense on a footballing level. Konaté, 27, brings Premier League experience, physical presence, and is still in his peak years as a defender.
Securing him without a transfer fee would be financially appealing, particularly for a club that needs to reinforce multiple positions this summer.
Virgil van Dijk has previously described Konaté as ‘world class’, underlining his quality and the regard he holds within the Liverpool squad.
However, centre-back is reportedly not at the top of United’s list of priorities. Harry Maguire extended his contract in April, and manager Michael Carrick is said to be focusing primarily on strengthening the midfield and attacking areas of the team.
Therefore, while United may have explored the possibility, this move seems unlikely to become one of their most realistic signings for the upcoming window.
Konaté’s impending exit nonetheless marks a significant moment for Liverpool. Having joined from RB Leipzig in 2021, he became a key figure in the squad and played a major role in helping the club secure the 2024–25 Premier League title, two League Cups, and an FA Cup.
However, after protracted discussions, Liverpool ultimately opted not to meet his wage demands, allowing him to leave on a free transfer this summer.
