Head coach of the Indonesia national football team, John Herdman, aims to instil a strong sense of unity and brotherhood so that the Garuda squad always gives their all on the pitch.
Herdman revealed that he has received full support since the day he arrived in Indonesia.
He brings renewed hope following Patrick Kluivert’s unsuccessful campaign to lead the national team to the 2026 World Cup.
With supporters still feeling the sting of disappointment, Herdman recognises that rebuilding trust will take time.
Evidence of this can be seen in the fact that home matches for the national team are not yet selling out, showing that the process of regaining full fan support will require patience and persistence.
Herdman explained that from the very beginning, his focus has been on creating a sense of brotherhood within the team.
He believes that this unity is a crucial foundation for building chemistry among the players.
He also noted that public support has gradually grown, providing an additional source of motivation for the squad.
“I think what I’ve learned is that a real sense of brotherhood is beginning to form,” Herdman said.
“Last week in May, I had the opportunity to work with all the local players.”
“I could truly feel the genuine spirit of the Indonesian people,” he added.
The English-born coach continued, explaining that all the players now share the same vision — to qualify for the World Cup.
He emphasised that this spirit must be maintained, as the road ahead will not be easy.
The team must continue to grow and gradually become stronger through thorough preparation.
“I’m excited to build on that,” Herdman stated.
“I feel there’s a real family-oriented culture here, and that’s something that can truly benefit teams striving to reach the World Cup.”
Furthermore, Herdman has reminded all his players to always give their utmost effort on the field.
He stressed that they carry the dreams of the Indonesian people — a responsibility that is far from simple.
Looking ahead, the 2027 AFC Asian Cup will serve as an important proving ground before the national team pursues its bigger dream.
“We can draw strength from that spirit, from our togetherness,” Herdman said.
“We can rely on our sense of family. I’ll make sure to do that with everyone involved.”
“And I think the diaspora players, when they come into camp, I want them to feel that every time.”
“To understand what Indonesia truly represents, and ultimately what we are fighting for — which is all of you,” he concluded.
