Manchester United are reportedly closing in on the signing of Atalanta star Ederson as their first addition of the summer transfer window, and the club is now pushing forward with a move for West Ham United midfielder Mateus Fernandes.

TEAMtalk has consistently highlighted Manchester United’s intention to secure at least two new midfielders this summer, as they plan for the upcoming season without Casemiro and possibly without Manuel Ugarte as well.

Last week, reports confirmed that the Red Devils had made ‘major progress’ in negotiations with Atalanta regarding Ederson’s transfer. The Brazilian has already reached an agreement on personal terms with Michael Carrick’s side, and a deal worth around £38 million is expected to be completed soon.

According to Caught Offside, Manchester United have now shifted their full attention towards Mateus Fernandes, who is expected to leave West Ham following their relegation from the Premier League.

The report adds that United have ‘accelerated talks’ with the 21-year-old’s representatives, with the player said to be ‘keen on the chance to play Champions League football.’

Earlier this month, it was revealed that Manchester United had made a fresh enquiry for Fernandes, with West Ham valuing the Portuguese midfielder at £80 million. However, their relegation could force them to accept a reduced fee.

Caught Offside further suggests that Fernandes could be available for less than €50 million (£43.2m / $58.2m), which would represent an excellent deal for a player of his calibre and potential.

Arsenal have also shown interest in Fernandes, who was arguably West Ham’s standout performer during a disappointing 2025/26 campaign. Paris Saint-Germain have made contact with the player’s entourage as well, while Manchester City, Newcastle United, Aston Villa and Chelsea are closely monitoring developments.

However, Fernandes’ admiration for Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes could give the Red Devils an edge in the race. The two share a strong relationship off the pitch, and the prospect of the pair linking up in midfield is particularly appealing for United fans.

Despite Fernandes being a priority target, Manchester United continue to assess other midfield options. Nottingham Forest midfielder Elliot Anderson has been a long-term target, though Manchester City remain favourites to secure the England international. INEOS, however, could yet attempt a late move to hijack the deal.

Newcastle United’s Sandro Tonali is another name admired at Old Trafford, with club legend Alan Shearer recently outlining a scenario in which the Italian international could complete a big-money transfer to United this summer.

Nevertheless, Mateus Fernandes remains a player to watch closely, with his departure from West Ham now appearing almost certain.
