AS Roma’s Effort to Sign Greenwood: Giallorossi Plan to Sell Kone, Ndicka, and Soule

AS Roma are preparing a €40 million offer for Mason Greenwood as part of their plan to strengthen their attacking line ahead of the new Serie A season.

The Italian side are reportedly prioritising Greenwood, currently with Olympique Marseille, as their main target to bolster the frontline. Roma are said to be readying a €40 million bid for the English forward.

Roma have more financial flexibility this summer after securing a spot in the UEFA Champions League for the first time in seven years.

Head coach Gian Piero Gasperini had been vocal last season about the lack of forwards that suited his tactical approach. He pointed out the major improvement following the arrival of Donyell Malen from Aston Villa in January.

Greenwood tops Roma’s wishlist

Gasperini now sees Greenwood as the ideal addition to the front line, especially since the Englishman is available on the transfer market due to Olympique Marseille’s current difficulties.

Reports suggest that Roma are preparing an initial €40 million bid plus add-ons to sign the 24-year-old, who primarily plays on the right side of a three-man attack. However, Marseille are believed to be holding out for a fee in the region of €50–55 million.

The former England international, who came through Manchester United’s youth academy, saw his career nearly collapse due to off-field controversies. Yet, he has revived his form since his €26 million move to France in 2024.

Greenwood registered 26 goals and 11 assists across 45 competitive appearances for Marseille this season. As part of the transfer terms, Manchester United will receive 40 percent of any future resale fee.

Roma appoint new sporting director, track Marseille star

AS Roma have appointed Tony D’Amico as their new sporting director following the dismissal of Frederic Massara amid a long-standing conflict with Gian Piero Gasperini. D’Amico and Gasperini previously worked together for several years at Atalanta.

The executive had also been linked with AC Milan, but he opted to join Roma before Milan’s internal restructuring took shape.

The Giallorossi kicked off their summer by officially releasing Donyell Malen and extending Mario Hermoso’s contract. Having met their Financial Fair Play obligations, Roma’s main focus is now to provide Gasperini with additional attacking options, according to Alfredo Pedullà.

Roma remain keen on Greenwood but are aware that his price tag is steep. The Italian club might need to raise their offer to around €50 million to persuade Marseille to sell. Greenwood has scored 48 goals and provided 17 assists in 81 appearances in France.

The Giallorossi have also been linked with Antonio Nusa from RB Leipzig and Crysencio Summerville from West Ham United, though no concrete steps have been taken yet. Their goal is to find a player capable of making an immediate impact. On the other hand, signing another central striker is not considered a priority at the moment.

The capital club are also open to offers for Manu Kone, Evan Ndicka, and Matias Soule as part of potential balancing deals. A move for the Argentine to an English Premier League club is reportedly gaining traction. Transfer dealings between club directors can often be unpredictable, but Roma acted swiftly to bring in Giovanni Manna from Napoli to avoid losing another strong candidate. Signing a high-profile forward could help offset the potential loss of Soule, although spending such a large sum on one player remains unlikely.

Manu Kone likely to leave AS Roma — and why a sale may be necessary

Although AS Roma have secured Champions League qualification, they may still be forced to sell Manu Kone this summer. Inter Milan had previously shown interest in the French midfielder, who has been one of the Giallorossi’s standout performers over the past two seasons.

Inter now appear more focused on signing Curtis Jones, but Kone’s future remains uncertain. Reports indicate that new sporting director Tony D’Amico’s first major task will be to oversee player sales. Roma are under Financial Fair Play scrutiny and must generate around €60 million in capital gains to stay compliant.

Consequently, Kone has emerged as a primary candidate for departure. The midfielder’s focus on Roma has reportedly waned, as evidenced by his decision to train alone before the match against Verona despite being available to join the team session.

Roma interpret this as a sign that a transfer is likely, and both Inter Milan and Paris Saint-Germain are monitoring the situation. Gasperini’s side value Kone at around €50 million, which would represent a significant capital gain given the player’s current book value of €11 million.

However, given their financial position, Roma may be willing to accept an offer of around €40 million plus bonuses. Among the current squad, Kone is considered one of the club’s most valuable assets. Goalkeeper Mile Svilar could match his valuation, but he has shown no indication of wanting to leave — a key factor for the club.

Evan Ndicka also holds strong market value, making him another potential sale candidate, particularly since he arrived on a free transfer. With the upcoming World Cup, Kone’s market price could rise further — a scenario Gasperini hopes for, as Roma will soon need to secure a replacement if he departs.
