Today’s smartphones have become significantly smarter and more powerful than their predecessors. Companies are now utilizing processors capable of effortlessly handling tasks such as Artificial Intelligence (AI), high-end gaming, and multitasking.

Qualcomm, MediaTek, and other chip manufacturers are constantly working on developing new technologies. Developing and manufacturing these advanced chips entails higher costs. Consequently, the expenditure on hardware for modern smartphones has increased compared to the past, which directly impacts the final price of the phone.

5G Technology Increases Expenses

5G networks have expanded rapidly across India, and now, almost every new smartphone comes equipped with 5G support. However, integrating 5G capabilities into a phone is not an inexpensive undertaking for manufacturers. 5G smartphones require advanced modems, superior antenna systems, more effective cooling technologies, and larger batteries. The inclusion of all this additional hardware drives up production costs. This is precisely why even entry-level phones have become more expensive than they used to be.

Increasing Focus on Cameras and Displays

Today’s consumers are no longer satisfied with just a basic smartphone. They expect exceptional cameras, brilliant displays, and a premium user experience. Features such as high-megapixel cameras, AMOLED screens, high refresh rates, Optical Image Stabilization (OIS), and advanced zoom capabilities are now becoming standard even in mid-range smartphones. These features require expensive components, which drives up the overall cost of the phone.

The Impact of Manufacturing and Import Costs

Many critical components used in manufacturing smartphones are imported from abroad. In recent years, challenges within global supply chains have led to price hikes for semiconductors, displays, and other electronic components.

Furthermore, shipping costs, raw material prices, and fluctuations in foreign currency exchange rates also increase companies’ operational expenses. Despite the rise in domestic assembly within India, many premium components are still sourced from countries such as China, Taiwan, and South Korea.

Extended Software Updates: Another Contributing Factor

Previously, smartphone companies offered software updates for only a limited period; however, the situation has now changed. Many brands are now promising to provide Android updates and security patches for a duration ranging from 3 to 7 years.

Maintaining long-term software support requires companies to deploy additional engineering teams and resources. This investment is ultimately factored into the final price of the product.

AI Features Emerge as the Biggest Draw

AI has now become the dominant trend in the smartphone industry. Companies are prominently integrating AI-based capabilities into their new devices. Features such as photo editing, live translation, smart virtual assistants, AI-powered search summaries, and various other intelligent functions are now becoming standard components of smartphones. Effectively powering these features necessitates robust hardware and cloud infrastructure, which, in turn, increases development costs.

Rising Consumer Expectations

The preferences of Indian consumers are also evolving rapidly. Consumers now demand superior design, extended battery life, fast charging capabilities, exceptional camera performance, and robust gaming performance. As customers demand more features and a superior user experience, companies respond by launching newer—and more expensive—models in the market. Consequently, the average price of smartphones continues to rise steadily.

Even Budget Phones Are No Longer What They Used to Be

Just a few years ago, a “budget smartphone” was synonymous with a device limited primarily to basic functions such as calling, messaging, and running rudimentary applications. However, nowadays, features such as high refresh rate displays, large batteries, fast charging, multiple cameras, and 5G support have started becoming available even in low-priced phones.
