A woman and her 16-year-old daughter were killed while 17 other passengers sustained injuries after a minibus overturned following a collision with a motorcycle in Madhya Pradesh’s Khargone district on Monday morning, police officials said.

The accident occurred on a road connecting villages in the district when the passenger minibus reportedly lost balance after coming into contact with a motorcycle and overturned on the roadside. The impact triggered panic among passengers as several people became trapped inside the vehicle.

According to police, local residents and emergency responders rushed to the scene immediately after the accident and launched rescue operations. Injured passengers were pulled out of the overturned vehicle and shifted to nearby hospitals for medical treatment.

Officials identified the deceased as a woman and her teenage daughter, aged 16. Both suffered severe injuries in the accident and could not be saved despite rescue efforts. Authorities said the condition of some injured passengers is being monitored, while several others received treatment for minor injuries.

Police said preliminary investigations indicate that the minibus overturned after hitting or attempting to avoid a motorcycle travelling on the same route. However, the exact sequence of events leading to the crash is still being examined.

The motorcycle rider also sustained injuries and was taken to a medical facility. Investigators are collecting statements from eyewitnesses, passengers and the vehicle driver to determine the circumstances surrounding the accident.

Road accident cases involving passenger vehicles remain a major concern in Madhya Pradesh, where authorities have repeatedly urged drivers to follow traffic regulations and maintain safe speeds, particularly on rural and district roads. Officials have also stressed the importance of regular vehicle fitness checks and adherence to passenger safety norms.

Following the latest accident, district administration officials reached the site and directed authorities to ensure prompt medical assistance for the injured. Police teams conducted spot inspections and arranged for the damaged vehicle to be removed from the road to restore traffic movement.

A case has been registered and further investigation is underway. Authorities are expected to examine the condition of the vehicle, the driver’s conduct and other factors that may have contributed to the crash.
