Kedarnath Yatra temporarily suspended as Uttarakhand issues Orange alert amid heavy rainfall

New Delhi: Kedarnath Yatra started on April 22, 2026, this year, with pilgrims registering online and booking for services before going from a month prior. The weather conditions in Uttarakhand may vary from day to day and hour to hour as well. Recently, a weather alert issued by the state mentioned heavy rainfall in the region, and has temporarily suspended Kedarnath Yatra for the pilgrims by issuing an Orange alert in the valley.

The move came as a safety step for the tourists who travel daily to make thier way to the shrine each year. As soon as the weather clears and visibility improves, the state advisory mentions resuming the yatra for the pilgrims.

Kedarnath Yatra halted temporarily

The alert comes amid a persistent bout of heavy rainfall being weathered by the state. Issued as a precautionary measure for the lakhs of tourists that make their way to the holy shrine each year. As per the report by News18, the Garhwal Commissioner Anand Swaroop stated that.

As a matter of fact, the state advisory issues mentions to hold yatra or taking hold of their positions at thier respective halt points until further notice to avoid inconveniences. All these restrictions are on track to be lifted as soon as the weather improves in the state.

While the improvement in weather in recent days in the valley of Uttarakhand makes it easier for travellers and pilgrims to visit the shrines, it also brings in the risk of landslides or natural disasters in and near the areas. The state advises not to travel from one place to another or visit the valley during an Orange alert as a matter of precaution and safety.

The helicopter services in the region remain suspended until the further notice, while the police is not letting new travellers to enter Kedarnath premises and are advised to take a hold at Haridwar, Rishkesh – the starting points of yatra.

The weather blockage aside, the Kedarnath Yatra typically unfolds every year between May and October before the temple closes due to winter’s heavy snowfall.

Meanwhile, helicopter services have been temporarily suspended due to heavy rainfall and fog.
