New Delhi: Israeli forces have seized control of Beaufort Castlea move described as Israel’s deepest military advance into southern Lebanon in more than two decades amid ongoing clashes with Hezbollah.

The operation has intensified tensions along the border, with military analysts calling the site one of the most strategically important elevated positions in the region.

Ancient Fortress With a Strategic Edge

Locally known as Qalaat al-Shaqif, or the “Castle of the High Rock,” Beaufort Castle is perched on a hill overlooking Nabatieh in southern Lebanon. The fortress provides sweeping visibility over the Litani River valley and parts of northern Israel, making it a valuable military vantage point.

At around 700 meters above sea level, the site offers significant surveillance and operational advantages, allowing forces to monitor movement across a wide geographical area.

A Fortress Shaped by Centuries of Conflict

Built in the 12th century during the Crusader period, Beaufort Castle has changed hands multiple times under Crusader, Muslim, Mamluk and Ottoman rule. Its commanding position ensured its continued military relevance long before modern warfare reached the region.

During the 20th century, the site became closely linked to the Arab–Israeli conflict. The Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) used the fortress during the Lebanese Civil War to launch attacks toward northern Israel, making it a frequent target for Israeli operations.

Role in Modern Military History

Israeli forces previously captured the castle during the 1982 Lebanon War following heavy fighting known as the Battle of Beaufort. Israel then maintained control of the area until its withdrawal from southern Lebanon in 2000.

The fortress later became a symbol of contested control, with Hezbollah regularly targeting positions in and around the ridge during years of cross-border conflict.

Renewed Fighting and Current Operation

According to Israeli officials, the latest operation involved intense ground clashes and airstrikes aimed at dismantling Hezbollah infrastructure. Defense authorities confirmed that troops secured the fortress and raised Israeli flags at the site.

The capture is being viewed as both a tactical and symbolic gain, given the fortress’s dominant location and historical importance.

Cultural and Security Concerns

Beaufort Castle is also a protected heritage site with recognition linked to UNESCO due to its cultural significance. The renewed military activity has raised concerns over potential damage to the medieval structure.

As fighting continues in southern Lebanon, the fortress once again stands at the center of a long-standing and evolving conflict shaping the region’s security landscape.
