Ahmedabad. The final match of IPL (IPL 2026) is to be played on Sunday (31 May) at Narendra Modi Stadium, Ahmedabad, but before that the weather has increased the concern of the cricket fans and both the teams. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an alert of thunder, lightning and rain in many areas of Gujarat including Ahmedabad.
According to Meteorological Department scientist Ramashray Yadav, there may be moderate to moderate rain with thunderstorms in Ahmedabad on May 31. Apart from this, today (May 30) heavy rain has been predicted at some places in Aravali, Mahisagar, Panchmahal and Dahod districts. Weather may also remain bad in Diu, Daman and Dadra and Nagar Haveli. In view of the bad sea conditions, fishermen have been advised not to go into the sea for the next five days. Due to rain, the temperature is likely to drop by 3 to 5 degrees Celsius.
What if the final is canceled due to rain?
According to the playoff rules of IPL, a reserve day is kept for the final match. An additional time of 120-120 minutes is available on both the main day and the reserve day to complete the match. If the entire match cannot be played due to rain then an attempt will be made to start the match by cutting the first overs. In any situation, both the teams will be required to play at least 5-5 overs.
If rain becomes a hindrance after the start of the match, the Duckworth-Lewis (DLS) rule will be applied to decide the winner. If the time is very short and the weather permits, then the result can also be decided through Super Over.
If the reserve day is also washed out, who will become the champion?
According to Section 16.11.2 of the IPL Playoff Rules, if due to weather it is not possible to conduct a match or Super Over on both the final and reserve day, then the team finishing higher in the points table of the league stage will be declared the winner. However, no official reserve day has been kept for the IPL final. Keep in mind that when the IPL final was held between Chennai and Gujarat in 2023, the match was played the next day. Not a single ball was bowled on the first day (28th May), then the toss took place on 29th May and the result of the match was declared.
This time Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) and Gujarat Titans (GT) are face to face in the IPL 2026 final. If the game is not played on both the days, then the team with better ranking in the league stage will directly become the champion of IPL 2026. In such a situation, everyone’s eyes will be on the weather, because rain in Ahmedabad can affect not only the match but also the decision of the winner of the entire season.
