Shubman Gill’s big blast became the first captain in IPL history to score a century in the playoffs.

Gujarat Titans (GT) captain Shubhman Gill played a historic innings in the IPL 2026 Qualifier-2 match played against Rajasthan Royals, which has surprised the cricket world. Chasing a huge and mountain-like target of 215 runs, Captain Gill led the team from the front and scored a blazing century of 104 runs in 53 balls to get his team a ticket to the final. This was the 5th century of Shubman Gill’s IPL career. Gill has created a new history by completing his century in just 47 balls in this match. He has now become the batsman to score the fastest century (in the fewest balls) in the history of IPL playoffs. Earlier this record was in the name of Rajat Patidar of Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB), who scored a century in 49 balls against Lucknow Super Giants in the eliminator match of the year 2022. For the first time in the 18-year history of IPL, a captain did this feat. Due to his innings, Shubman Gill has achieved a position in the history of IPL, which even the legendary captains like MS Dhoni, Rohit Sharma or Virat Kohli could not do till date. Gill has become the first captain in IPL history to score a century in a playoff (or knockout) match. Earlier, as captain, David Warner had definitely reached the score of 90s in the playoffs, but no captain was able to convert it into a century. Apart from this, Shubman Gill has also become the first batsman in the world to score more than one century in IPL playoff matches. Earlier, his first playoff century came against Mumbai Indians (MI) in Qualifier-2 of the year 2023, when he played an explosive inning of 129 runs. Century in less balls: Vaibhav Suryavanshi and Abhishek Sharma equalized. This is the second time in Shubman Gill’s IPL career, when he has completed his century facing less than 50 balls. In this matter, he has equaled the special records of young sensation Vaibhav Suryavanshi and Sunrisers Hyderabad’s Abhishek Sharma. These three have now become such Indian batsmen, who have achieved the feat of scoring a century in less than 50 balls 2 times in IPL.
