Top 5 Century Hitters In IPL History: A splendid century from captain Shubman Gill overpowered Vaibhav Sooryavanshi’s 96 as the Gujarat Titans (GT) stormed into their third IPL final in just their fifth season.
GT will face the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) in the final on Sunday, May 31, at their home ground, Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, where GT lifted the IPL 2022 trophy under former skipper Hardik Pandya.
In Qualifier 2 on Friday night in Mullanpur, GT openers Gill and Sai Sudharsan made the chase of 215 seem a walk in the park.
While RR needed seven sixes from Sooryavanshi and four maximums from Donovan Ferreira, Gill and Sudharsan combined to hit only four sixes in their opening stand of 167 runs off 12.5 overs.
What the GT duo did impeccably was find gaps on the field and over the infielders to pierce a streak of fours: Gill crunched 15 fours, and Sai stroked eight to build a match-winning platform for the likes of Sundar and Buttler to clean up the game.
Sudharsan and Gill laid down the gauntlet very early in the chase when they took on RR’s spearhead pacer, Jofra Archer, for 29 runs in Archer’s first two overs.
Nandre Burger, Tushar Deshpande, and Brijesh Sharma all were sent to the fence by the Gill-Sai duo as GT ended the powerplay with 69/0.
Yash Raj Punja was tapped for two fours by the left-hander, while Deshpane was smoked for two fours and a six by the right-hander as Gill raised his fifty in 29 balls. The acceleration had begun by then as Gill plundered Jadeja for two sixes and a four.
Punja and Burger leaked 29 runs off the next 12 balls before Sudharsan, who registered his ninth half-century of IPL 2026, got out hit wicket for the second game in a row.
Soon after, Gill reached his century off 47 balls, the fastest by a GT batsman, breaking his own record of 49 balls against the Mumbai Indians in IPL 2023, incidentally also in Qualifier 2. It was a statement knock from the GT captain as it powered his side through to the season finale.
