French football icon Michel Platini has come out in support of Kylian Mbappe after the French national team captain publicly cautioned against the far right gaining power in France. While acknowledging the Real Madrid forward’s awareness of social issues, the former UEFA president also advised him to be mindful of the heavy responsibilities and possible repercussions that come with such public statements.
Political debate heats up
Mbappe recently stirred discussion across France after voicing serious concern about the potential success of the far-right National Rally in the upcoming presidential election. National Rally leader Jordan Bardella responded critically on social media, yet Platini defended Mbappe’s right to express his opinions in public debate. However, the French legend made it clear that such views should remain distinct from the duties associated with representing the national team.
Mbappe expresses his concerns
In an interview with Vanity Fair, the Real Madrid striker openly discussed his apprehensions about the far right possibly winning political control. “It affects me; I understand what it means and what consequences it can bring to my country when people like them come to power,” Mbappe said in the interview.
Speaking to RTL in response, Platini explained, “Kylian Mbappe is right to take a stand when he’s not wearing the captain’s armband or the French national team jersey. If he’s in Madrid or anywhere else, he can express political opinions, of course. But with the French national team armband, with the French national team jersey, you represent all French citizens. That’s why it’s difficult to take sides.”
Legend cautions against division
Platini praised the intelligence of modern players but also warned Mbappe about the divisive outcomes that can follow such declarations. “It’s good that smart people speak up about societal issues. Footballers aren’t necessarily foolish; some are actually quite intelligent,” he remarked. “But once you take a stand, you’ll inevitably upset half the world—unless you truly believe in every word you say. And I think Kylian does.”
Focus shifts to the World Cup campaign
Mbappe will soon need to balance these political discussions with his footballing commitments as Didier Deschamps’ team gears up for the 2026 World Cup. Drawn in Group I, France will begin their campaign against Senegal at the MetLife Stadium on June 16, followed by matches versus Iraq and Norway. The captain will aim to quiet his critics by maintaining his impressive international performances and guiding Les Bleus deep into the competition.
