Mexico has a new football champion following Toluca’s remarkable back-to-back triumphs in 2025.
Cruz Azul have captured their first Liga MX crown since the Covid-affected 2021 season, and their first championship in a full campaign since 1997, after defeating Pumas in a dramatic final this evening.
Both Mexico City sides entered the second leg level on aggregate, and the match seemed destined for extra time on Sunday night until Carlos Rotondi delivered the decisive goal in the fourth minute of stoppage time, sealing the victory for Cruz Azul.
Pumas suffered a late collapse in front of a capacity crowd at the Estadio Olímpico Universitario, with two of their players being sent off in the dying moments of the contest.
The win marks Cruz Azul’s 10th league title overall and their second in this decade, ending a long spell of frustration that stretched through the 2000s and 2010s.
