Spain head coach Luis de la Fuente has officially unveiled his 26-player squad for the 2026 World Cup, with young sensation Lamine Yamal one of eight Barcelona stars earning selection. The Catalan club’s strong representation stands in stark contrast to Real Madrid, who, for the first time in history, do not have a single player included in Spain’s World Cup squad.
Barcelona’s dominance, Real Madrid’s absence
In a major surprise for Spanish football, Real Madrid will not have any Spanish representation at a World Cup for the first time ever. De la Fuente has instead placed his trust in La Liga champions Barcelona, rewarding their domestic form by naming eight of their players in the final 26-man squad.
The Barcelona contingent travelling to the United States, Mexico, and Canada includes Joan Garcia, Eric Garcia, Pau Cubarsi, Gavi, Pedri, Dani Olmo, Ferran Torres, and Lamine Yamal. The selection reflects the club’s impressive season, while leaving out Real Madrid’s Dean Huijsen and experienced defender Dani Carvajal.
De la Fuente embraces the ‘favourites’ label
De la Fuente expressed confidence that his squad has the quality to emulate Spain’s 2010 World Cup triumph. Speaking earlier this month, the 64-year-old coach acknowledged Spain’s status as one of the top contenders, while also urging caution ahead of the tournament.
“We must stay grounded, even though we are considered favourites,” De la Fuente stated. “I accept that we are one of the favourites, but so are England and France.” He also admitted that finalising the squad was a difficult process, saying, “The toughest part is scouting players, but the most painful is leaving out those who deserve to be here.”
Injuries and notable exclusions
Beyond Real Madrid’s complete omission, several big names also miss out due to injuries and tactical decisions. Fermin Lopez suffered a fractured fifth metatarsal in his right foot during Barcelona’s 3-1 win over Real Betis, ruling him out of contention. Meanwhile, Nico Williams has been included despite carrying a late-season injury with Athletic Club.
The squad also showcases Premier League talent, with Arsenal’s David Raya, Martin Zubimendi, and Mikel Merino joining Manchester City midfielder Rodri.
Spain’s 26-player World Cup squad in full
Spain will continue their preparations with friendlies against Iraq and Mexico before beginning their World Cup campaign in Group H against Cape Verde, Saudi Arabia, and Uruguay. The midfield remains the team’s strongest area, powered by the creativity and balance of Pedri, Rodri, Fabian Ruiz, and Zubimendi.
