Kolkata, 24 May. Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate Debangshu Panda won the Falta assembly seat in South 24 Parganas district in West Bengal by a huge margin of 1.09 lakh i.e. 71.20 percent votes in the counting of votes held on Sunday. Trinamool Congress (TMC) candidate Jahangir Khan stood fourth.

EC had ordered re-polling at all 285 polling stations in Falta.

It is noteworthy that in the second phase of the state assembly elections, voting was held in Falta on April 29. But re-polling was ordered at some booths following allegations that perfume, ink and adhesive tape were used on EVMs.

More than 87 percent votes were cast in the re-polling held on May 21.

Subsequent investigation also revealed alleged attempts to tamper with webcam footage from polling booths, leading to the Election Commission ordering re-polling at all 285 booths. In the same series, in the re-polling held on May 21 among 2.36 lakh voters in Falta, more than 87 percent votes were cast.

Just two days before the re-polling, Jahangir Khan had announced his withdrawal from the election contest, which TMC termed as his personal decision. However, Jahangir Khan’s announcement of not contesting the election had no meaning as he was retained as the TMC candidate as per the electoral process.

Debangshu got 1,49,666 votes

After 22 rounds of counting today, Debangshu Panda got 1,49,666 votes, while CPI(M)’s Shambhu Nath Kurmi stood second with 40,645 votes. Congress candidate Abdur Razzaq Mollah stood third with 10,084 votes. Khan got only 7,783 votes in this constituency which has a total of 2.36 lakh voters. It is noteworthy that TMC had held this seat continuously since 2011 and in 2021 the party had won with about 57 percent votes.

BJP captures 208 seats out of 294

Thus, with the result of Falta seat, the election process of Bengal Assembly was completed. Out of the total 294 seats, the ruling BJP won the maximum 208 seats while TMC stood second with 80 seats. While Congress and AJJUP got two seats each, CPI(M) and AISF had to be content with one seat each.
