FIR lodged against SP MP Iqra Hasan, accused of creating ruckus outside DIG office

Saharanpur, 22 May. A case has been registered against Samajwadi Party MP Iqra Hasan in Saharanpur district of Uttar Pradesh. This case is to a protest outside the office of the Deputy Inspector General (DIG) on May 19. In the FIR, the Kairana MP and her supporters have been accused of blocking the road, creating ruckus and obstructing government work during a demonstration to the Sonu Kashyap murder case.

Apart from Iqra Hasan, a case has been registered against seven named persons and 25 unidentified people under various sections of the law. The FIR was lodged on the basis of a complaint lodged by the in-charge of Civil Lines police post at Sadar Bazar police station. According to police officials, Hasan and his supporters blocked the main road outside the DIG office, causing massive disruption to traffic and inconvenience to the public.

The complaint further alleged that the protests violated prohibitory orders and disrupted government functioning. Police said legal action was initiated after reviewing the incident and collecting evidence. Officials are also examining the viral video and CCTV footage to identify the unidentified accused mentioned in the FIR. Officials indicated that more legal action could be taken as the investigation progresses.

The incident has created fresh political tension in the district, with Samajwadi Party workers expressing anger over the FIR lodged against the MP and his supporters. This dispute is to the murder case of Monu Kashyap, a resident of Dashle village in Shamli district, who was murdered on April 21. According to reports, the victim’s family had been demanding justice for several weeks and had approached several authorities regarding the matter.

On May 19, Iqra Hasan reached the DIG office in Saharanpur along with the victim’s family members and her supporters to press for action in the murder case. Hasan staged a protest outside the DIG office to express solidarity with the victim’s family and demand justice. After the meeting held at the DIG office yielded no immediate results, MP Iqra Hasan left the office premises, where a lady police inspector took her to the police station. Iqra Hasan later alleged that she was detained for about ten minutes at the women’s police station.

During the protests, five persons were booked and sent to jail under charges to disturbing peace. Those detained included former minister of state Manguram Kashyap as well as Anuj, Ajay, Shishpal and Tejpal. Hasan accused the police of quietly sending the five men to jail, without initially giving details of any FIR against them. After the party workers were detained, the Samajwadi Party MP staged another protest outside the Sadar Bazar police station and demanded their immediate release.

According to reports, the demonstration at the police station continued from around 4 pm to 9:30 pm. A heated argument also took place between Iqra Hasan and police officers during the demonstration. According to eyewitnesses, during the confrontation the MP challenged the policemen, saying, “Shoot me! Hang me! What more can you do?” Five people detained under Section 151 were released the very next day.

During the protest, Iqra Hasan said that when common citizens go to the authorities with their complaints, the authorities do not listen to them. Now there is only one way left. Either send us to jail or release our party workers. We are fully prepared to go to jail.” The same night, City Magistrate Kuldeep Singh reached the police station and assured the protesters that all those arrested, including Mangeram Kashyap, would be released on Wednesday morning.

After this assurance Hasan ended the protest. After the copies of the FIR became public, political activities again intensified, which again spread anger among Samajwadi Party supporters in the district. After the dharna in Saharanpur, the MP went to Lucknow the same night with a victim of ration complaints and met Samajwadi Party supremo Akhilesh Yadav. After this Akhilesh Yadav provided financial assistance of Rs 200,000.
