Manchester United are preparing for what could be one of their most significant transfer windows in recent years, as Champions League football makes a return to Old Trafford next season.
The primary focus for the club is a complete overhaul of the midfield, with expectations that three new players will be brought in to replace Casemiro and Manuel Ugarte, provided a buyer can be found for the Uruguayan midfielder.
However, United are also planning reinforcements on the left flank, though it remains uncertain whether a left-back or winger will take priority. Additionally, a more experienced striker is on the radar, and a new No. 2 goalkeeper to support Senne Lammens is also being targeted.
A well-placed insider has revealed that there is "near certainty" the club’s transfer budget this summer will surpass last year’s £240 million expenditure, as part of a wide-ranging rebuild of Michael Carrick’s squad. While most of the funds will be directed towards strengthening the midfield, United are also exploring potential market opportunities in other areas — including a possible move for AC Milan sensation Rafael Leao.
Although Leao’s contract at San Siro includes a £152 million release clause, reports suggest that the Italian club are willing to entertain offers in the region of £43 million. This steep drop in valuation could make Leao an attractive option for United, who have long admired the 26-year-old forward.
The Rossoneri are reportedly ready to part ways with Leao for two main reasons: his contract has only two years remaining, and tensions between the Portuguese attacker and manager Massimiliano Allegri, along with his coaching staff, are said to be growing, with their relationship described as being on the “verge of breaking down.”
Leao is widely regarded as one of Europe’s most exciting attacking talents. Standing 6’2″ tall, he combines physical strength, explosive pace, and technical flair with an eye for goal that makes him a constant threat in the final third.
Teammate Luka Modric once summed up his immense potential, saying, “When I train with him, I see he is one of the best players in the world. The incredible thing is that he can still improve — it just depends on him.”
Interestingly, Leao’s playing style bears similarities to a current United player who is spending the season on loan at Barcelona, which could explain why the club have been cautious about pursuing a deal. Reports from The Peoples Person indicate that United have turned down the opportunity to sign Leao after he was offered to several Premier League sides, including newly crowned champions Arsenal.
Nonetheless, AC Milan insider Pietro Balzano Prota has claimed that the Manchester club remain “genuinely interested” in the Almada-born forward, implying that the situation remains fluid and a transfer cannot be ruled out.
Separate reports from Italy suggest that United have explored the possibility of a swap deal involving Joshua Zirkzee, Manuel Ugarte, or Marcus Rashford — with Zirkzee reportedly being the player Milan are most keen on.
Given INEOS’s recent approach to squad management since taking charge in 2024, pursuing a player of Leao’s calibre — who boasts world-class ability but has faced criticism for his attitude — would represent a calculated gamble.
However, if United can secure Leao for a reduced fee by including a player who is no longer part of their future plans, the club’s leadership might be tempted to take the risk on a player with the potential to become one of the world’s most formidable attackers.
